If your child needs a heart transplant, we’re here for your family. The heart failure, VAD, and transplant program at Dell Children’s is the first pediatric heart transplant program in Central Texas. And in 2020, we were recognized for successfully performing the first pediatric heart transplant in the region. Our goal is to provide advanced heart care that improves your child’s heart function and quality of life.
Our care doesn’t end after your child’s surgery. We connect your child and family with specialists for recovery and rehabilitation. And, we provide ongoing follow-up care and monitoring into adulthood.
What to expect during your child’s first appointment
Once you call to request your child’s appointment, a member of our care team will contact you to schedule. We can also reach out to your child’s doctor to get their medical history. During your child’s first appointment, we start by listening to you and your concerns. We also perform a physical exam and may perform diagnostic testing, including an echocardiogram and electrocardiogram.
This is also a time for you to ask us your questions — big and small. We understand how overwhelming it is to be told your child has a heart condition. We’re here to provide the care and support your family needs.

When your child is diagnosed with a heart condition, such as heart failure, there’s a lot to think about. We can discuss both therapeutic and surgical treatment plans. Our team of highly experienced pediatric specialists can provide you with a second opinion based on experience and as part of an integrated national network of care.
Before your child’s appointment, check with your insurance company to find out if a second opinion is covered. We can request your child’s medical records from their doctor on your behalf, so that they can be shared with your care team before your arrival.
