Tracheostomy and home ventilator program

Infants and children with a tracheostomy, with and without a home ventilator, need ongoing care from experienced pediatric specialists who work closely with families. When you choose Dell Children’s Medical Center for your child’s care, your family will work with a multispecialty team including pediatric pulmonologists, otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat doctors), respiratory therapists, speech therapists, dieticians, social work and nurse coordinator to provide optimal care for your child.

Your child’s care team starts by listening to you and answering your questions.  We provide support and education for your child and family in the hospital before your child’s tracheostomy placement. After your child’s tracheostomy, we provide detailed information and instruction on how to care for your child and make sure you feel comfortable and supported before going home. Our compassionate team works closely with you, understanding that this is an adjustment that requires your family to learn new skills and create new routines.  The Dell Children’s tracheostomy care team provides your family with all the tools and resources you need to care for your child when you leave the hospital.  After you go home, you will be able to contact your team with any questions or concerns that you may have.  The team will follow your trach journey in and outpatient to provide continuity of care throughout.

The tracheostomy and home ventilator program at Dell Children’s provides care for children with tracheostomies and children that are dependent on mechanical ventilation. The goal of our program is to manage the complex medical needs of these children and support your family. As part of our multispecialty approach to care, your child will meet with several of their specialists in the same outpatient visit. Your family’s care coordinator helps connect the dots for your child’s care, such as scheduling appointments, obtaining medical supplies, and answering questions.
