Leaders in pediatric brain and spine care
Dell Children’s Medical Center at Ascension Seton delivers the most advanced pediatric care in Central Texas — and that includes care for your child’s brain and spine. Whether your child has epilepsy, ongoing headache pain, hydrocephalus, scoliosis or another neurology need, our specialists are ready to deliver the care your child needs. Only in Austin. Only at Dell Children’s.
Pediatric neurologists, neurosurgeons, physiatrists and neuropsychologists at Dell Children’s Medical Center at Ascension Seton in Central Texas specialize in diagnosing and treating children with brain, spine and nervous system disorders:
- Brain and spine tumors
- Epilepsy
- Hydrocephalus
- Movement disorders
- Vascular malformations
- Moyamoya disease (a rare blood vessel disorder)
- Spina bifida
- Chiari malformation and syringomyelia
- Other nervous system disorders
We start by listening to you and your child. Your child’s doctor may recommend advanced tests or imaging, such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to help diagnose your child’s condition. Then, we work together to create a personalized care plan that’s right for your child and family.
Pediatric neurosurgery for babies, children and teens
For some neurological conditions, surgery may be recommended as part of your child’s care plan. Neurosurgical care for children may include:
- Cerebrovascular surgery
- Cervical spine surgery
- Epilepsy surgery
- Traumatic brain and spine injury surgery
- Tumor surgery
- Other brain and spine surgeries
If your child has a traumatic brain or spine injury, we’re here with the most advanced care. At Dell Children’s, we have a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and Level I Pediatric Surgery Center, accredited by the American College of Surgeons. This is the highest level of pediatric trauma and surgery care, meaning we are able to treat even the most complex conditions and injuries.
Ask us your questions — big and small. Your child’s care team takes the time to explain the procedure and how to care for your child after surgery. And, our nurses and child life specialists provide support to your family before, during and after surgery.
Pediatric neuropsychology for developmental disorders
Developmental disorders can affect your child’s physical and emotional health. At Dell Children’s, we deliver care for the whole child. Pediatric neuropsychologists diagnose, treat, and help manage the care of children and teens with developmental disorders. Our specialists and care teams have expertise in the assessment and treatment of neurological conditions that affect memory, self-control, attention, language, fine motor coordination, visual-spatial processing, sensory perception and learning.
Appointments typically last three to six hours and take place in a classroom-like setting. Your child meets one on one with a specialist and participates in activities such as drawing, answering questions, pointing at pictures and listening to stories. After the assessment, your child’s specialist discusses with you what was observed and answers your questions. Your child’s specialist may recommend additional therapies and treatments. And we will send a report to your child’s neurologist.
