Delivering the highest level of epilepsy care

When you choose Dell Children’s for your child’s epilepsy care, you get a multispecialty care team dedicated to your child’s needs. Your child’s care team includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, specialized nurses, child life specialists and more. And your child’s doctor uses advanced diagnostics to help find the cause of your child’s seizures. Together, we create a care plan to help treat and manage, and in some cases stop, your child’s seizures.

Highest level of epilepsy care: As a Level IV Epilepsy Center, Dell Children’s delivers the highest level of epilepsy care. Level IV epilepsy centers have epileptologists (epilepsy doctors) with the expertise to deliver advanced neurodiagnostic monitoring. And our epileptologists provide the highest level of treatments, such as medication therapy and surgery.

Specialized care for kids: Our pediatric doctors and care teams are specially trained to care for children and their unique health needs. Your child’s doctor starts by listening to you and your child, and then we create a care plan that’s right for your child.

Support for your child and family: Family plays an important role in a child’s care plan. And the more you know, the better you can care for your child. Our nurses provide the information you need to help you manage your child’s care at home. Having a child with epilepsy or seizures can require additional care and support. And, our hospital rehabilitation services offer supportive pediatric therapy, such as music therapy, when your child is in for epilepsy monitoring.

When your child has a seizure, they may need special monitoring to help diagnose and treat their condition. Our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at Dell Children's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center has a dedicated pediatric monitoring unit. We use some of the latest technology for diagnostic testing and monitoring, including: electroencephalogram (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetoencephalogram (MEG), positive emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) neuropsychological testing, Wada test and more.

Your child’s care team includes an epilepsy specialist, nurses and technicians who monitor your child and the frequency of their seizures. We also evaluate how well medications or other treatments are helping to manage your child’s condition.

Pediatric epilepsy specialists deliver advanced care

There are many different types of epilepsy that can develop at any age. Our team is dedicated to delivering personalized care to children of all ages with seizures or epilepsy. This includes care for babies and teens.

Pediatric care for managing epilepsy

In our Level IV Epilepsy Center, we offer some of the most advanced treatment options. Epilepsy may be treated with anti-epileptic medications (AEDs), diet, therapy and sometimes surgery.

Therapeutic treatments and nerve stimulation: When you choose our epilepsy center for your child’s care, you are connected to the highest level of epilepsy care. We offer therapeutic treatments, including vagus nerve stimulation, antiepileptic drug therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation and more.

Diet: Diet changes along with medications may help children with epilepsy manage their seizures. The ketogenic (keto) diet may be recommended as part of your child’s care plan. The keto diet includes high fat and low carbohydrate foods.

Surgical care: If surgery is recommended, have confidence knowing our neurosurgeons have expertise in pediatric brain surgery for epilepsy. We specialize in brain surgeries, including: laser ablation (targeting the area where seizures start), lobectomy (removing the part of the brain where the seizures start), topectomy, resective surgery and more. Your child’s surgeon will take the time to explain the procedure to you and answer your questions. And, our nurses and child life specialists provide support to your family before, during and after surgery.
