When your child does not get enough sleep or isn’t getting good quality sleep, it can affect their overall health and well-being. Our multidisciplinary care team includes a pediatric sleep medicine specialist, pediatric nurse, pediatric respiratory therapist, sleep educator, and child psychologists (telehealth). Comprehensive care for sleep disorders

Talk with your child’s pediatrician if your child is showing signs of snoring, restless sleep, sleep apneas, pauses in breathing, trouble falling and staying asleep, sleep walking, bed wetting, night terrors, behavior concerns, irritability, tiredness, difficulty focusing, or learning difficulties. Your child’s doctor may refer you to a pediatric sleep medicine specialist for further evaluation and diagnosis.

Sometimes, sleep conditions are caused or worsened by other medical conditions. Conditions we diagnose and treat

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (snoring, gasping, mouth breathing)
  • Central sleep apnea (short pauses in breathing while sleeping)

Diagnostic testing

Diagnostic testing may be recommended to help diagnose your child’s sleep condition. A consultation will help determine which test is right for your child. Diagnostic and therapeutic  testing may include:

  • Pediatric sleep studies in the sleep lab
  • Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (airway evaluation while asleep)
  • Actigraphy (at-home monitoring of sleep and wake cycles)
  • Overnight oximetry (at-home monitoring of oxygen levels in the blood)

Pediatric sleep studies

The pediatric sleep lab at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. This accreditation ensures high-quality, compassionate care is delivered to patients with sleep disorders. Our care team is specifically trained in pediatrics and experienced in caring with children with complex medical conditions, behavioral conditions, mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy. For children who need an overnight sleep study, parents or a loved one will stay the night with their child.

Pediatric sleep studies performed at the sleep lab include:

  • Polysomnography sleep study (PSG)
  • Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)
  • CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure)
  • BiPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure)

A doctor’s order is needed for a sleep study. Your child’s pediatrician, sleep medicine specialist or other specialist may order a sleep study.
