Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital ERs deliver 24/7 pediatric emergency care. Your child’s pediatric emergency care team specializes in treating serious illness and injury, including respiratory complications, abdominal pain, concussion, broken bones, burns and more. We are backed by advanced cardiovascular, surgical, neuro, orthopedic and trauma specialists. With our transport helicopter, we bring lifesaving care to children and families across the region. Our board-certified pediatric emergency care doctors, nurses and care teams are trained in pediatric emergency protocols and deliver advanced lifesaving care – so your child has the right care at the right time.

We listen to quickly understand your child’s health needs. Then, we provide care that’s right for your child. Advanced imaging may be used to help diagnose your child’s condition. Specially trained care teams provide diagnostics, such as X-ray, ultrasound, MRI and CT scans. If your child needs trauma care, your family is connected to the highest level of care at our Level I Pediatric Trauma Center at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

Pediatric emergency care for serious illness and injuries

If you notice your child’s illness becoming more severe or if your child has a serious injury, it may be time to take your child to the ER. Signs that your child needs emergency care include:

  • Blue face and lips or pale coloring
  • Burns
  • Chest pain
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • High fever
  • Major injury or broken bone
  • Seizure
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhea
  • Swallowing of a battery or toxic substance
  • Trouble breathing
  • Other serious illness or injury

If your child is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, go directly to the ER or call 911.

If your child has a severe illness or injury, they may need to stay in the hospital. If your child needs a higher level of care, they may be transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. Our PICU care team includes highly experienced pediatric hospitalists, critical care doctors, nurses and care teams that care for your child’s advanced needs. This may include diagnosis, monitoring and delivery of specialized medications and treatments.

Connected to advanced burn care

If your child has a severe burn, they need immediate and comprehensive care. Specialists at the Ascension St. Vincent Adult and Pediatric Burn Center deliver 24/7 emergency burn care. Our specialists have advanced expertise in treating burns in infants, children and teens. Our multidisciplinary team delivers advanced critical care, comprehensive burn treatment, and reconstructive surgery. We are the only burn center in Indianapolis that cares for adults and children – meaning children and parents will stay together if multiple family members need care.

Caring for the whole child

Certified child life specialists are part of our care team. These specialists provide education to children and families, and help children manage fears, stress and other challenges while they are receiving care in the hospital and in our clinics. Our specialists meet with your child and family and work with you to create a care plan that supports your child’s emotional and developmental health.

Your child’s care doesn’t end when your family leaves the ER. Before your child leaves, we connect you with the right specialists and follow-up care at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, if needed. Care might include pharmacy, pediatric rehabilitation, pediatric heart care, pediatric neurology, pediatric surgery, pediatric cancer care, pediatric orthopedic care, and more. Our goal is to make sure your child and family are connected to all the services you will need to help your child recover and get back to their daily life.

We have a dedicated pediatric transport team to bring children directly to a higher level of care in the NICU, PICU, ER, and Trauma Center. Our transport team has the specialized skills and advanced technology to care for children while they are being transported, and they have constant access to the medical teams that will be providing care for your child in the hospital to provide a seamless transition.
