Care for children with advanced kidney failure
When you are told your child needs a kidney transplant, schedule an appointment with our highly experienced transplant team at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. During the first visit, your child will have a complete evaluation by the transplant team. If your child is a candidate for a transplant, they are added to the national waitlist. We provide living and deceased donor transplants to help increase your child’s chance of finding a match.
While your child is waiting for their new kidney, we work with your family on a care plan to keep your child as healthy as possible, and to best prepare for a successful transplant surgery.
What to expect during your child’s kidney transplant
When you choose Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital for your child’s kidney transplant, you get a multidisciplinary transplant team dedicated to their care. Pediatric nephrologists, surgeons, therapists, counselors, dietitians, pharmacists, infectious disease specialists and others work together to provide all the care your child needs before, during and after kidney transplant. We understand this can be an emotional time for your entire family. Your child’s care team is here to support your family every step of the way.
Once a match is found for your child, their transplant will be scheduled right away. After surgery, they will recover in our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). During this time, your child’s care team continuously monitors your child’s health to make sure their new kidney is functioning properly.
Before your child leaves the hospital, we schedule their follow-up visits and show you how to care for your child at home. Children who receive a kidney transplant will need to take medications, including immunosuppressants, to help prevent transplant rejection and infection. We work closely with your family to make sure your child is taking the proper medications and is adjusting well after surgery.
Living donor program
The living donor program can give your family more opportunities to find a donor match for your child. Pediatric patients can receive a donor kidney from an adult. If you have a family member or other individual who is a good match, they may donate one of their kidneys. If your family member or other individual is not a match for your child, we offer a living donor exchange program through the National Kidney Registry.
