Children's Surgery VerificationWhen surgery is recommended as part of your child’s care plan, you’ll find experienced surgeons at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. We are a Level I Children's Surgical Program designated by the American College of Surgeons – meaning we deliver the highest level of pediatric surgical care. Our board-certified pediatric surgeons use the latest and most advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive procedures.

We have the expertise to deliver advanced surgical care, from surgery for common conditions, such as hernias and appendicitis, to complex newborn and pediatric surgeries. At your child’s first consultation, we start by listening to better understand you and your child. Then, we work with you to create a comprehensive surgical care plan that’s right for your child.

Specialized surgical care for children

Your child’s pediatric surgical care team may include pediatric general surgeons, pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatric surgical advanced practice providers, certified surgical technicians, certified child life specialists, and more. Pediatric surgeons at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital use minimally invasive procedures as a part of many children's care plans. With this type of procedure, your child’s surgeon uses small incisions, which may mean a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.

Our pediatric general and thoracic surgeons specialize in surgical care for:

  • Appendicitis
  • Cancer
  • Congenital anomalies in newborns
  • Congenital lung conditions
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) conditions
  • Hepatobiliary conditions
  • Hernias (inguinal and umbilical hernias)
  • Pectus excavatum and carinatum
  • Thoracic conditions
  • Trauma

Your child’s care team takes the time to explain the procedure to you and your child in a way you both will understand. We also explain what to expect before surgery and how to care for your child while they are recovering after surgery. Certified child life specialists are also part of your child’s care team to help manage fears, stress and other challenges while your child is receiving care.

Multispecialty surgical care

Your child is cared for by a team of surgeons with a wide range of knowledge and experience. And your child will benefit from the care of many different specialists, working together. If your child’s condition is related to another health concern, your child’s care team collaborates with other pediatric specialists at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital to deliver comprehensive care that’s right for your child.

We work closely with intensive care specialists in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis – delivering advanced surgical care for some of the tiniest and most vulnerable patients. We also collaborate with pediatric specialists in otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), gastroenterology (GI), radiology, and many other pediatric specialists.

Prenatal consultations for fetal and newborn surgery

Experienced pediatric surgeons at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital have the expertise to provide neonatal surgery for newborns, such as diaphragm hernia repair, gastroschisis (intestines to extend outside of the belly) and intestinal atresia. We work closely with you and your maternal-fetal medicine specialist before your baby’s birth. We help you better understand your baby’s condition and prepare for your baby’s surgery.
