Maternal-fetal medicine in Indiana

Maternal-fetal medicine specialists at Ascension St. Vincent deliver specialized care for moms and babies during high-risk pregnancies.

Not all women will need more advanced care during their pregnancy. But if you do, our care teams are ready to deliver care during high-risk pregnancies. You may have questions, expectations and some worries. That’s why our maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists at Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis and Evansville, Indiana, start by listening to understand you, your preferences and concerns. Your care team will answer your questions — big and small. And your MFM and OB-GYN will work together with you as a team. Our goal is to deliver healthy babies, with early and regular prenatal care and monitoring.

Advanced care for high-risk pregnancy

Your care team specializes in prenatal diagnosis and monitoring, using advanced ultrasound, fetal heart ultrasound and more. MFM specialists are board-certified OB-GYNs with expertise in diagnosing and managing high-risk pregnancies. These highly experienced specialists have two to three years of additional education and clinical training. Your MFM specialist and OB-GYN care for you and your baby in a collaborative way throughout your pregnancy.

You may need MFM care during your pregnancy if you have a health condition, experience complications during pregnancy, or have had complications during a pregnancy in the past. Throughout your pregnancy, your care team monitors your health and your baby’s health to detect any potential concerns as quickly as possible so that treatment can begin immediately.

During pregnancy, we care for:

  • Abnormal blood clotting
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Chronic high blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Fetal anomalies (a condition that appears as a baby is developing in the womb)
  • Fetal growth disorders (when a baby does not grow to a normal weight)
  • Heart conditions during pregnancy
  • Placental concerns, including preeclampsia and placenta accreta spectrum (when the placenta does not detach at birth)
  • Genetic disorders
  • Multiple births
  • Preterm labor
