What to expect at your child’s neurology appointment

The last thing you want is for your child to feel sick longer than necessary. Our neurologists and care teams start by listening to get to know you and your child. During your child’s exam, the doctor reviews your child’s health history, your family history, and completes a thorough neurologic exam. If blood tests and imaging are recommended, our care team helps coordinate those appointments.

Dedicated pediatric epilepsy program for children and young adults

Having a child diagnosed with epilepsy can be overwhelming. At Peyton Manning Children's Hospital, our experienced child neurologists provide comprehensive care for patients with epilepsy – from infants to young adults. We use testing such as electroencephalograms and MRI scanning, along with genetic testing, to diagnose the cause of your child’s seizures. We also have a dedicated epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU). Our pediatric neurologists provide multiple treatment options including medical management, ketogenic diet, vagal nerve stimulation, and referral to a pediatric neurosurgeon, depending on the cause of your child’s seizures. We personalize your child’s treatment. Our goal is to provide the latest and best possible treatment for your child.

Preventive care for children with neurologic conditions

Our doctors and care teams focus on care that’s right for your child and family. Children with a chronic neurologic condition are at greater risk for complications from flu and other infections. That’s why it’s important to talk to your child’s care team if you notice symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty coughing
  • Having problem moving arms and legs
  • Head or spine pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Problems swallowing or clearing fluid from their airway
  • Seizure

Care for neurodevelopmental disorders

At Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital we focus on helping each child develop their special abilities. If your child is diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder, talk to our neurologist about connecting you with a specialist in autism, attention deficit disorder and language disorder care, called a developmental and behavioral pediatrician. We also have specialists in genetic and developmental care, pediatric rehabilitation therapy and support services.
