What to expect at your child’s neurology appointment

The last thing you want is for your child to feel sick longer than necessary. Our neurologists and care teams start by listening to get to know you and your child. During your child’s exam, the doctor reviews your child’s health history, your family history, and completes a thorough neurologic exam. If blood tests and imaging are recommended, our care team helps coordinate those appointments.

We use testing such as electroencephalograms and MRI scanning, along with genetic testing, to diagnose the cause of your child’s seizures. We also have a dedicated epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU). Our doctors and care teams focus on care that’s right for your child and family. Children with a chronic neurologic condition are at greater risk for complications from flu and other infections. That’s why it’s important to talk to your child’s care team if you notice symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty coughing
  • Having problem moving arms and legs
  • Head or spine pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Problems swallowing or clearing fluid from their airway
  • Seizure
