Dell Children’s NICU Follow-Up Clinic

Our care team at Dell Children’s NICU Follow-Up Clinic in Austin, Texas, helps monitor your baby after being discharged from the NICU.

NICU follow-up at Dell Children’s

The Dell Children’s NICU Follow-up Clinic provides comprehensive developmental screening and specialized support for patients who may be at risk for developmental delay. When your baby leaves the hospital, your neonatologist and care coordinator at the NICU, may refer you to our outpatient NICU Follow-up Clinic for your baby’s follow-up care. We have experienced pediatric specialists who listen to understand you and your health concerns. Then, we work with you and the child’s primary care pediatrician and specialists to create a post-acute care plan that’s right for your child and your family.

Experienced pediatricians and nurses deliver NICU care for many conditions

During the time after being in the NICU, some babies with complex health conditions are more medically vulnerable. Our NICU Follow-up Clinic delivers personalized, compassionate care for many conditions, including:

  • Abnormal neurological imaging
  • Diaphragmatic hernia
  • Hypoxic ischemic encephalitis
  • Intraventricular hemorrhage grade 3-4
  • Meningitis
  • Myelomeningocele
  • Open neural tube defects
  • Prematurity (less than 34 weeks)
  • Seizures
  • TORCH infections

Post-acute care services after being in the NICU

The timing of NICU follow-up care is based on your child’s corrected gestational age.

At 3 months:

  • Feeding assessment
  • Developmental screening
  • General Movement Assessment

At 6 and 18 months:

  • Developmental screening
  • Feeding assessment

At 12 and 24 months:

  • Bayley screening
  • Feeding assessment

The care team at Dell Children’s is here to support you during your child’s development and recovery. Our pediatricians and nurses specialize in post-acute care medicine in an outpatient setting, much like the neonatologists who delivered neonatal intensive care when your child was hospitalized. We help you focus on your child’s recovery, which includes:

  • Getting enough sleep
  • Getting proper nutrition, hydration and exercise
  • Maintaining good, healthy habits
  • Managing your medication routine
  • Using wound care supplies

Other NICU Follow-up care services may include connecting you with pediatric therapists or skilled nursing.

A doctor’s referral is needed for NICU Follow-up Clinic services.

Please fax referrals to 512-324-0946. Referral info should include patient name, insurance information, date of birth, and if possible the corrected gestational age or expected date of delivery (EDD).
