Frequently asked questions about our cancer care services

A cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to go through it alone. At Ascension Seton, you'll meet with a cancer specialist and care team to discuss your diagnosis, answer your questions, and create a personalized treatment plan. We're here to help you understand your options and connect you with the support and resources you need throughout your care.

Many people choose to get a second opinion after a cancer diagnosis or before starting treatment. A second opinion can help confirm your diagnosis, review your treatment options, and give you added confidence in your care plan. At Ascension Seton, our cancer specialists can review your medical records, imaging, and pathology results and discuss personalized treatment recommendations. Before your appointment, check with your insurance provider to see if a second opinion is covered.

Whether you need a referral depends on your insurance plan and the type of appointment you're scheduling. Some insurance plans require a referral from your primary care doctor, while others allow you to schedule directly with a cancer specialist. Our care teams can help you understand your insurance requirements and schedule your appointment.

Most health insurance plans cover medically necessary cancer care, but your coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on your specific plan. Ascension Seton works with many insurance providers, and our financial counselors can help verify your benefits, explain your coverage, discuss financial assistance options, and answer questions about the cost of care.

Cancer screening recommendations vary based on your age, personal health history, family history, and risk factors. Ascension Seton offers screenings for many types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, cervical, lung, and prostate cancer. Talk with your primary care doctor about which screenings are right for you and how often you should be screened.

At Ascension Seton, your cancer care is coordinated by a multidisciplinary team of specialists who work together to create a personalized treatment plan. Depending on your diagnosis, your care team may include medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, oncology nurses, radiologists, pathologists, dietitians, rehabilitation specialists, social workers, chaplains, palliative care specialists, and other experts. By working together, your team delivers coordinated care focused on your needs.

Some Ascension locations offer access to cancer clinical trials and research studies that evaluate new treatments and therapies. If you're interested in participating, your oncologist can help determine whether a clinical trial may be right for you based on your diagnosis, treatment goals, and eligibility. Participation is always voluntary.

Cancer care is about caring for the whole person. Ascension Seton offers support services that may include cancer care navigation, nutrition counseling, social work, financial counseling, rehabilitation, palliative care, spiritual care, support groups and survivorship resources. Your care team will help connect you with the services that best support you and your loved ones throughout your cancer journey.
