Manage your recovery with cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation
Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Wellness Center provides outpatient cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. Your care team includes nurses, exercise physiologists, and respiratory therapists who specialize in strengthening your heart and lungs and helping you manage your symptoms. During your visits, we discuss your medications, symptoms, home exercise program, nutrition and lifestyle changes that can help lower your cholesterol, blood pressure and improve your overall health. We also help you cope with stress by providing support to you and your family.
Your insurance may offer benefits for the outpatient cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Our registration team can check with your insurance provider to better understand your coverage. A doctor's referral is required to participate.

Cardiac rehabilitation
Experienced care teams at the Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Wellness Center specialize in cardiac rehabilitation care following a heart attack, diagnosis of heart failure, and heart surgery. Our nurses and exercise specialists work with you to help strengthen your heart and lungs and manage your symptoms and recovery.
Cardiac rehab may be recommended for patients who recently had heart surgery or who have been diagnosed with certain conditions such as:
- Bypass surgery
- Congestive heart failure
- Coronary stent or angioplasty
- Heart attack
- Heart transplant or heart pump
- Heart valve replacement or repair
- Treatment for angina

Outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation and respiratory services
Pulmonary rehabilitation and respiratory services are a part of our outpatient program designed for adults who are limited in their daily activities due to breathing issues and lung disease.
Through our program at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West and Rutherford, we deliver personalized therapy plans, exercises and education that will help you breathe better.
Personalized pulmonary rehabilitation
Our program is monitored by a combination of registered nurses, exercise physiologists and respiratory therapists, and we work closely with doctors to guide your care.

Exercise training that will help you:
- Exercise safely and effectively
- Increase your endurance
- Prepare you to do a home exercise program

Each session will include an exercise program and educational training personalized to your specific needs and lung condition. Your oxygen saturation, heart rate and blood pressure will be monitored throughout each session.
You’ll have sessions twice per week for one hour until you complete your time with us which is anywhere from 12-36 sessions. We will meet you where you are, and help you achieve your goals.
