About lung cancer screenings at Ascension Via Christi

When it comes to your lung health, it’s important to understand your risk for lung cancer before you have symptoms. Talk to your primary care doctor about your health concerns and whether a low-dose CT lung screening is right for you, or call the Via Christi Lung Cancer Screening Program at 316-268-5864.

Our comprehensive lung care program focuses on prevention and early detection of lung cancer. We provide advanced diagnostic testing and treatments for esophageal cancer, lung cancer, benign lung nodules and other chest conditions.

Screen early. Breathe easy.

If you're age 50 or older and currently smoke or have quit smoking, a lung scan is key to knowing your risk of lung cancer.

A lung cancer screening helps identify risk for lung cancer

The first step is finding out if you qualify for a low-dose CT lung screening. Your provider can counsel you on how to stop smoking if you still smoke, or may refer you for a screening.

Screening means testing for lung cancer before you have any symptoms. Early detection can help reduce deaths from lung cancer through earlier treatment.

Based on U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidelines, you may qualify for a low-dose CT lung cancer screening if you:

  • Are between age 50 and 80
  • Currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years
  • Have a 20 pack-year smoking history, such as smoking one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years
  • Do not currently have symptoms of lung cancer but have a higher risk due to family history, having emphysema or pulmonary fibrosis, and exposure to certain substances exposures

Understanding a low-dose CT screening

A CT lung screening uses an X-ray device that rotates around your body to create cross-sectional images of the inside of your lungs. When you arrive for your test, you will change into a gown and lie on a table that slides in and out of a large tube, called a CT scanner.

It is a painless imaging test that takes only a few minutes. After the scan, a radiologist reviews the images and prepares a report for your doctor. With a clearer picture of your lung health, your doctor can create a care plan that’s right for you.

Medicare and many private insurers may cover a CT scan for people at high risk. For many high-risk patients, the first scan may be covered without a copay.

Lung disorders affect non-smokers, too

Some people who develop lung cancer have no risk factors. Other risk factors that can contribute to lung cancer, other than tobacco use, include:

  • Radon gas exposure
  • Secondhand smoke
  • Exposure to cancer-causing agents at work, such as arsenic, uranium, asbestos or diesel exhaust
  • Air pollution
  • Gene mutations

Before scheduling a lung screening, check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage.

Check with your insurance provider before scheduling to understand your coverage. Low-dose CT screening may be covered by various insurance plans as well as Medicare for those who meet certain high-risk criteria. If you have Medicare Part B and meet certain qualifications, your screening may be covered. A referral from your doctor is required.
