Concussion
The Ascension Saint Thomas Howell Allen Clinic's Sports Concussion Program offers individualized and comprehensive management of concussions.
What is a Concussion?
A concussion is defined by the Centers for Disease Control as a bump, blow or jolt to the head that changes normal brain functions. When the head experiences blunt-force trauma or is shaken violently, the brain impacts with the rough, bony surface of the inside of the skull. This creates tears and fissures in the brain cells. These tears can have major impact on thinking and movement, and can increase your chances of getting another concussion. Repeated concussions can cause lasting cognitive issues.
