The Seton Heart Institute in Austin, Texas, specializes in heart care for women at risk or with cardiovascular disease.

When you choose Ascension Seton, you get a team of cardiologists experienced in delivering heart care that is personalized for women. Your doctor diagnoses, treats and monitors heart conditions that commonly affect women, such as heart disease, heart attack and chronic chest pain. .Every appointment starts with a conversation. And your doctor listens to understand you. Your care team takes the time to answer all your questions — so you get a care plan that is right for you.

Helping prevent heart disease in women

The first step in getting the care you need is to start a conversation with your doctor about things like your health history and risk for heart disease. We will have a real, collaborative conversation. Then, your doctor works with you to create a care plan that may include lifestyle changes, medications, and lowering high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Common risk factors for heart disease in women include:

  • Diabetes
  • Family history of heart attack and stroke
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Menopause
  • Mental stress and depression
  • Pregnancy complications (ie. preeclampsia)
  • Smoking

What to expect at our center

The women’s heart program at the Women's Heart Center provides you with two consultation options: new patient appointments and women's heart health assessments.

New patient appointments: For women with symptoms of heart disease or women at risk for heart disease. During your appointment, your doctor may provide a formal risk assessment, diagnosis and care plan.

Women's heart health assessment

If you do not have symptoms of heart disease, a women's heart health assessment helps your doctor create a heart disease prevention plan, based on your specific needs. Your heart health assessment includes:

  • A cardiac exam
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Finger-stick cholesterol- glucose check
  • Review of your medical history
  • Risk assessment and analysis
