Concussion Care Network

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head, making the brain bounce round and against the skull. The injury needs time to rest and heal as every concussion injures the brain to some extent.

Most concussions resolve in a reasonable amount of time. Should your or your young athlete's injury persist, we will draw on the expertise of our team, consisting of specialists in primary care, neurology, neuropsychology, sports medicine and vestibular therapy.

Concussion signs & symptoms

There are many signs or symptoms associated with a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Some may appear immediately while others may emerge over time. Additionally, how long a symptom lasts depends largely on the individual.

  • Headache or pressure in head
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Light and noise sensitivity
  • Vision problems
  • Balance problems
  • Behavior or personality changes
  • Temporary loss of consciousness

Concussion testing & screening

Baseline Testing
Our concussion specialists recommend that all athletes above age 10 and participating in contact sports complete baseline testing. By completing baseline and post-concussion testing, they can determine the severity of a concussion and develop a treatment plan for return to learn and play.

  • Football
  • Lacrosse
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Cheerleading
  • Gymnastics

In the event of a concussion, the brain needs rest from sports and school to heal. It is never safe to return to play if an athlete is experiencing any symptoms of a concussion.

ImPACT© Testing
We utilize the ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) system, which employs computerized neurocognitive assessment tools to assist in determining an athlete's ability to return to play after suffering a concussion. It's the most widely used, computer-based program in the world and is implemented across high school, collegiate and professional level sports, including the NFL. The ImPACT system measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning, including:

  • Attention span
  • Working memory
  • Sustained and selective attention time
  • Reaction time
  • Response variability
  • Non-verbal problem solving

Features:

  1. Measures player symptoms
  2. Measures verbal and visual memory, processing speed and reaction time
  3. Reaction time measured to a 1/100th of second
  4. Assists clinicians and athletic trainers in making difficult return-to-play decisions
  5. Provides reliable baseline test information
  6. Produces a comprehensive report of test results
  7. Results are presented as a PDF file and can be emailed
  8. Automatically stores data from repeat testing
  9. Testing is administered online for individuals or groups

Even if an athlete has not received a baseline test, he or she can still take the ImPACT test post-concussion due to its ability to assess severity of concussion and determine when it's safe for them to return to play.

Additional Testing & Screening Service
In the event of a concussion, your doctor may also recommend one of the following:

  • Symptom score
  • Balance testing
  • Vestibular screening
  • Neurocognitive testing
  • Vision screening
  • Neurological exam
