When you choose Ascension Providence Salome Inpatient Rehabilitation Center in Waco, Texas, you’ll benefit from a team approach, bringing together the expertise of many rehabilitation specialist with advanced rehabilitation training, always remembering that the most important team members are you and your family. Our team includes doctors, rehabilitation-certified nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, nutritionists and respiratory therapists. You and your family are connected to specialized rehabilitation care for the following conditions:
- Stroke Brain
- injury
- Spinal cord dysfunction or injury
- Amputation and limb impairment
- Orthopedic injuries, hip fractures or post-surgical repair
- Neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barre' syndrome (GBS), and Parkinson's disease
- Other neuro-muscular disorders and medically disabling conditions such as pulmonary disease and dysfunction; renal failure or post surgery rehab may also qualify

The inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) is located on the Ascension Providence hospital campus and is for patients who are transitioning to post-acute care after being discharged from the hospital. To be accepted to the IRF, you must agree to actively participate in the daily schedule of therapy sessions and self-care activities.
Personalized care for your rehabilitation needs
We work together to deliver care that is right for you. You will benefit from comprehensive medical management led by doctors with extensive rehabilitation expertise. Medical specialist consultations are available on site as part of hospital-based rehabilitation units. Our care team treats conditions that affect movement, swallowing, and your ability to communicate. We help build your strength during the early stages of your recovery. Your therapy schedule is designed to help you live a more independent life.
During your stay, you will have:
- One-on-one therapy sessions with individualized treatment plan.
- Emphasis on addressing psychosocial as well as physical needs, patient and family education, and discharge planning.
- All private rooms and common spaces to relax and connect with guests.
We offer the following rehabilitation services as part of our comprehensive care:
Physical therapy: Teaches you exercises to improve your balance, strength and mobility. They may also help you learn how to use walkers and canes, braces, artificial limbs or other mobility devices.
- Wound care
- Intensive gait program
- Vestibular, balance, and dizziness rehabilitation
- Neurologic rehabilitation (for conditions including stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), MS, Parkinson’s disease)
Occupational therapy: Occupational therapists focus on improving your everyday living skills, including bathing, dressing, grooming and eating. They also may provide training to you with equipment that will help you better perform these activities.
- Vision therapy
- Neurologic rehabilitation (for conditions including stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, ALS, MS, Parkinson’s disease)
Speech therapy: Works to improve your ability to communicate, problem-solve and reason, and address any problems with swallowing.
- Cognitive rehabilitation
- Dysphagia (swallowing disorders) rehabilitation
- Modified barium swallow exam
- Voice disorder therapy
- Communication disorder rehabilitation
Your rehabilitation care team may also include a dietitian, pharmacist, respiratory therapist and specialists. Your therapy sessions and activities will be posted daily on a schedule board. Your doctor will continue to follow your progress and remain in charge of your medical care.
Types of post-acute care
If you are hospitalized for a serious illness or injury, your doctor may recommend some type of post-acute care after being discharged from the hospital. We help you reach a higher level of functional movement throughout your recovery.
Other post-acute care options may include home health care with nursing, respiratory care and rehabilitation therapy or a skilled nursing home.
When you leave the hospital to recover at home, Ascension Providence’s network of outpatient physical therapy clinics and cardiac rehabilitation centers help you continue your recovery with guided therapy and exercises.
