Conditions we treat
Ascension Texas Cardiovascular provides comprehensive care for heart conditions, including heart disease and heart failure.
-
Aortic aneurysm
When the main artery in your body that carries oxygen-rich blood develops a balloon-like bulge, it becomes an aortic aneurysm. Two types of aneurysms occur in the aortic artery: abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA). Treatment for aortic aneurysms can include recommendations for lifestyle changes, medications or surgery to repair the aortic artery. Your care team will explain your treatment options and help create a care plan that's right for you.
-
Congestive heart failure
Heart failure means the heart is not pumping enough blood to the body. This heart condition can make you tired, cause breathing problems and lead to fluid buildup. Your care team will work with you to create the right plan for you.
-
Coronary artery disease (CAD)
This is the most common heart disease. It occurs when oxygen-rich blood is not able to reach the heart muscle because of fatty deposits called plaque that build up in the heart arteries. Talk to a doctor about treatment options that may include medication, therapies, or surgery.
-
Heart attack
Heart attacks occur when blood flow to the heart is blocked. If you’re feeling the symptoms of chest discomfort, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, nausea, or discomfort in the neck, jaw or arms, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
Our emergency rooms have dedicated care teams to help treat your heart attack symptoms and evaluate your next level of treatment. Care plans may include medication, surgery and cardiac rehabilitation. Regular check-ups with your primary care doctor and lifestyle changes, and knowing your family history can help lower your risk of a heart attack. Talk to a primary care doctor or cardiologist today.
-
Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)
This heart condition weakens the heart muscle, making it difficult for your heart to pump blood. We have a multidisciplinary team that collaborates to provide comprehensive care for cardiomyopathy.
-
Heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation (AFib), flutter and ventricular tachycardia
These treatable heart conditions occur when your heart beats irregularly. An irregular heartbeat can be too slow or too fast. It also could mean that your heart skips a beat. Treatment options may include medication, therapies or surgery. Talk to a cardiologist to find out what treatment plan is right for you.
-
Heart valve and structural heart disease
This heart condition affects one or more of the heart’s valves. If blood doesn’t flow properly when the heart valves open, the reasons can be valves that are leaky (regurgitation), too narrow (stenosis), or not opening properly (atresia). Heart and valve problems can lead to heart attack or progressive heart failure. So it’s important to talk to your doctor about early treatment options when you receive your diagnosis. For some heart valve conditions, surgery may be recommended.
-
High blood pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, increases the risk of heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure is an important step in preventing heart attacks, stroke, and kidney disease and in reducing the risk of developing other serious conditions. We work with you to determine which treatment option is right for you, including lifestyle changes and medications.
-
High cholesterol
High cholesterol is a condition where blood contains too much fat deposits, and can cause plaque build up in your arteries. If not treated, high cholesterol can lead to heart disease and stroke. Our heart care teams will help you monitor your cholesterol with regular blood testing. Other treatments can include medications and lifestyle changes.
If you are experiencing chest pain, especially in combination with jaw or arm pain, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting or difficulty breathing, you might be having a heart attack. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away.
Advanced diagnosis and treatment for cardiovascular conditions
Our cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, cardiac electrophysiologists and cardiovascular surgeons start by listening to you and your concerns. We also have specialists who deliver advanced care for heart conditions during cancer care (called cardio-oncology conditions) and for women at risk for heart disease. Heart disease can cause symptoms including pain, weakness, fatigue, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or an irregular heartbeat.
Heart disease is the #1 cause of death and disability in the U.S. But a simple, noninvasive heart screening gives you information about your risk. You and your doctor can create a care plan to help prevent heart attack and heart disease. Risk factors for heart disease include:
- • Smoking
- • Family history of heart disease
- • Diabetes
- • High blood pressure
- • High cholesterol
- • Obesity
Other diagnostic testing for heart conditions includes blood tests, cardiac catheterization, cardiac imaging, chest X-rays, echocardiogram (echo) and electrocardiogram (EKG).
We work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that is right for you. Some heart conditions can be treated with medications. More complex or advanced heart conditions may be treated with a minimally invasive procedure or surgery to improve blood flow, oxygen levels, heart functionality and damaged heart valves.
