Why choose Ascension Wisconsin for breast cancer care?

Dr. BuAli explains how our doctors, cancer specialists and care team collaborate and work together for you and with you.

Understanding breast cancer

Breast cancer develops when the healthy, normal cells in the breast change and begin to grow out of control and function in a different way. In most cancer types, the changed cells often grow to form a lump or mass called a tumor. Cancer cells can also grow into nearby areas and spread to other parts of the body and cause more harm.

Your breast cancer doctors and care team delivers a customized care plan for your cancer journey.

We treat many types of breast cancer, including:

  • Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS): Noninvasive breast cancer in the milk ducts
  • Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC): Cancer of the milk ducts that has invaded breast tissue beyond the ducts
  • Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC): A rare, invasive cancer that blocks the lymph vessels in the breast skin
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC): Cancer that begins in milk glands
  • Male breast cancer: Cancer that forms in the breast tissue of men
  • Metastatic breast cancer: Also known as stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body

Breast cancer symptoms

Many people think about lumps in the breast when they think about breast cancer symptoms. But there are other types of symptoms to watch for.

Common symptoms of breast cancer include:

  • A lump you can feel in your armpit or breast
  • Skin on your breast that’s red, puckered, scaly or itchy
  • Dimples in your breast that look like the outside of an orange
  • Change in the size or shape of your breast
  • Inverted nipple (when your nipple turns inward)
  • Fluid coming out of your nipple that’s not breastmilk
  • Swollen lymph nodes by your collarbone or armpit

Having these symptoms doesn’t mean that you have breast cancer. However, it’s important to talk to your doctor to rule out any health issues.

How is breast cancer diagnosed?

Breast cancer specialists who know you and your condition review your treatment and progress. They work together to customize your overall care plan to support your physical well-being and mental and emotional health.

Some of the diagnostic tests your doctor may perform to test for breast cancer include:

This testing helps your doctor diagnose your condition and determine the stage of your cancer — for even the most rare cancers. Breast biopsies are performed using advanced imaging guidance to accurately evaluate areas of concern found on a mammogram, ultrasound or MRI. Our specialists use minimally invasive techniques to collect small tissue samples, helping provide a precise diagnosis while minimizing discomfort and recovery time.

Getting regular breast health screenings and health check-ups may help identify breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable. We recommend that women get a mammogram each year, starting at age 40, or earlier if you have a family history of breast cancer. When you choose women’s health and breast specialists at Ascension Wisconsin for your care, you’re connected to all the care you need — from routine screenings to advanced care.

We offer imaging locations close to home — from dedicated breast imaging centers to women’s health centers and our mobile mammogram program. The latest imaging supports 3D mammography screening and abbreviated breast MRI, as well as diagnostic tests for advanced care (diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, image-guided needle biopsy and placing preoperative wires or magnetic seeds to remove cancer or a breast lesion that is not presenting as a palpable lump).

At Ascension Wisconsin, we offer a comprehensive approach to identifying and monitoring an individual’s risk for developing cancer. Through our personalized Cancer Prevention and Wellness Program, we’ll work closely with you to create a care plan that includes targeted screenings, testing and follow-up care based on your individual risk. Talk with your doctor or contact the Cancer Prevention and Wellness Program at 262-785-2273.

Blood tests can give your doctor a lot of information. They can see if certain elements in your blood are in a normal range. But in many cases, blood tests are only part of the information your doctor needs to make a diagnosis of a health condition. The diagnostic blood test will confirm or rule out if you have a certain condition or type of cancer.

If you are high risk or have a family history of breast cancer, we deliver cancer genetic screening, testing and counseling to help you and your doctor better understand your risk for developing cancer.

We use advanced genetic and molecular studies to recognize breast cancer subtypes and hormone receptors (HER-2, PR, ER). With molecular profiling such as Mammaprint and Oncotype Dx, we can determine if patients with ER positive/ HER-2 negative disease would benefit from adding chemotherapy to their anti-estrogen therapy.

How we treat breast cancer

At Ascension Wisconsin cancer centers, we provide innovative medication treatments, the latest surgical technologies and techniques, high-tech radiation facilities and support services. Our breast surgeons are part of a national team of cancer specialists sharing the latest in cancer care knowledge and research. At Ascension Wisconsin, we provide many treatments, including:

Breast reconstruction is surgery to create a new breast shape in place of a breast that has been removed (mastectomy). It can be done with implants or with tissue from another part of your body. Sometimes both are used to rebuild a breast shape. The breast mound created comes as close as possible to the shape and look of a natural breast.

Surgery may be done to reconstruct either one breast (unilateral) or both breasts (bilateral). The goal of the unilateral reconstruction is to create a breast mound that matches the other breast. If both breasts have been removed, the goal of the surgery is to create both breast mounds about the size of your natural breasts.

Surgeons specialize in breast-conserving lumpectomy using smaller, more precise incisions; Hidden Scar™ breast surgery; and nipple-sparing mastectomy. You may have options for immediate breast reconstruction, including a consultation with a plastic surgeon. We also work with plastic surgeons to provide breast-conserving surgery with a lift or reduction.

  • Hidden Scar breast surgery, including Hidden Scar lumpectomy and nipple-sparing mastectomy

This type of surgery, also known as a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, only removes the tumor in its entirety. The goal of this surgery is to remove the cancer, while saving as much of the healthy breast tissue as possible. Our surgeons can discuss immediate breast reconstruction, including consultation with a plastic surgeon.

Surgical oncologists and anesthesiologists provide enhanced recovery pathways as part of your surgical care plan. They are an important part of our cancer treatment programs. Each pathway is personalized for different types of cancer treatment, to help speed up your recovery after surgery. Your care team uses these protocols to help you prepare for what to expect before, during and after surgery.

Medical oncologists work with your gynecologist and breast surgeon to deliver advanced care (chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted immunotherapy) to help stop cancer spread, including:

  • Hormone therapy (i.e. anti-estrogen therapy, the most common type of systemic therapy given to patients with breast cancer)
  • Immunotherapy and advanced targeted drug therapy (available as part of standard therapy and through clinical trials)

Specially trained therapists provide education and preventive exercises to help decrease your risk of lymphedema prior to surgery. Specialists also assess you after surgery to help deliver therapy for lymphedema (if needed) or identify problems with shoulder mobility following your procedure.

Advanced radiation therapy is used to target and destroy cancer cells while avoiding the surrounding healthy tissue to help decrease the risk of the cancer returning. Radiation treatments include:

  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • High-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy
  • Low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy
  • 3D conformal radiation therapy
  • Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT)
