Vascular disease screenings

A vascular screening can help you and your doctor find problems early and help you understand your risk for vascular diseases, such as stroke, aneurysm and peripheral artery disease (PAD). At Ascension St. John, our vascular screening includes a bundle of six tests for $249 (out of pocket). These tests can help detect clogged, damaged, or weakened arteries and blood vessels. The screening includes a:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening

Abdominal aortic aneurysm is an enlargement in the abdominal aorta. An ultrasound is used to measure the size of your abdominal aorta

  • Carotid artery screening (for stroke risk)

Atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid arteries can reduce blood flow to the brain and may increase your risk of stroke and heart disease. During an internal carotid artery screening, an ultrasound probe is placed on your neck and images are taken to help identify plaque buildup.

  • Peripheral artery disease screening

Blood pressure is recorded from both your arms and ankles. The scan detects problems with blood circulation.

  • Baseline electrocardiogram

A noninvasive recording of your heart’s electrical activity using electrodes to detect heart rhythm. An EKG measures and diagnoses abnormal heart rhythms and other abnormalities. Your doctor may recommend a baseline screening around age 40.

  • Cardiac function evaluation

An ultrasound probe is placed on your chest to evaluate heart function and the amount of blood pumped out of the heart during each beat.

  • Cardiac calcium score

A heart screening that uses an X-ray to identify and measure calcium in your coronary artery. A CT calcium score can also be used to identify your risk of heart disease or heart attack. Other risk factors include diet, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle and a family history of early heart disease.

Advanced surgical care for blood vessel disorders

Vascular surgeons at Ascension St. John are part of a national team of vascular specialists who are trained in the latest testing, treatments and procedures, including the treatment of:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
  • Arteriovenous malformation (AVM)
  • Carotid artery disease (risk factor for stroke)
  • Critical limb-threatening ischemia
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and large clots
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
  • Peripheral vascular disease (chronic venous insufficiency)
  • Pulmonary embolism (blood clot)

If surgery is recommended as part of your care plan, your doctor may use minimally invasive procedures with the goal of a shorter recovery time and lower risk of infection. Our vascular surgeons use a small incision and catheter to place a stent, repair a bulge, or remove a blockage, and restore blood flow. Minimally invasive vein surgery may include:

  • Dissolving or removing large clots (deep vein thrombosis or DVT)
  • Opening blood vessels and placing a stent (angioplasty and PCI)
  • Reducing risk of stroke through surgery (transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR))
  • Repairing bulging aneurysm (endovascular surgery)
