Helping prevent heart disease in women

At our women’s cardiac risk clinics, we focus on heart disease prevention. The first step in getting the care you need is to start a conversation with your doctor about things like your health history and risk for heart disease. We will have a real, collaborative conversation. Then, your doctor works with you to create a care plan that may include lifestyle changes, medications, and lowering high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Common risk factors for heart disease in women include:

  • Diabetes
  • Family history of heart attack and stroke
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Menopause
  • Mental stress and depression
  • Pregnancy complications (ie. preeclampsia)
  • Smoking

What to expect at the Women’s Cardiac Risk Clinic

Your first appointment at our Women’s Cardiac Risk Clinic includes a health evaluation and a fasting blood test. This blood test will help you and your doctor better understand your cholesterol, blood sugar, protein levels and more.

At your second appointment, you will have an electrocardiogram (EKG). An EKG measures the electrical impulses of your heart. After your EKG, your heart specialist will review your results with you and provide follow-up care. Your care team can also share your results with your primary care doctor.
