If you're above 50, are a current, or former smoker who has quit within the past 15 years, a lung scan is key to knowing your risk of lung cancer.
Talk to a doctor about a lung screening if you are:
- Age 50–80
- Current or former smoker who has quit within the last 15 years
- Smoking history of at least 20 pack years (one pack per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 10 years)
A doctor’s order is needed for a low-dose CT scan. Please connect with your provider to request an order and complete a shared decision-making visit. If you do not have a doctor, we’re here to help you find an Ascension provider so you can take the next steps. To find a primary care provider you can call or schedule online.

Understanding a low-dose CT screening
A low-dose CT scan is a quick, painless test that takes detailed images of your lungs. You’ll lie on a table that moves through the scanner, and the exam takes just a few minutes. Your doctor will review the results with you and discuss next steps.
Ascension Illinois offers CT lung cancer screening for just $99 at time of service for patients who qualify. Medicare and many private insurance plans cover lung screening for those at high risk. Check with your insurance provider to confirm your coverage.

Smoking cessation program
If you’re ready to quit smoking, we’re here to help. Our smoking cessation program provides virtual education on the effects of smoking, what happens to your body when you quit smoking and tools to help you quit. You can also join our support group, where you can talk with others who are also trying to quit smoking. The group is led by trained nurses who are certified instructors.
The program is complimentary thanks to support from the Ascension Illinois Foundation. To register for an upcoming date, call 844-952-HOPE or see the class schedule and register online.
Check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage before scheduling. Low-dose CT screening may be covered by various insurance plans as well as Medicare for those who meet certain high-risk criteria. If you have Medicare Part B and you meet certain qualifications, your screening may be covered. But you will need a doctor’s order.
