Gynecological cancer treatments

At Ascension Seton, gynecologic oncologists collaborate with other highly trained members of the health care team to develop highly specialized surgical and therapeutic treatment plans, enhanced with our recovery care program. Each recovery pathway is personalized for different types of cancer treatments to help you reach your goals. Your care team may recommend the following treatments as part of your care plan, including but not limited to:

Chemotherapy (chemo) is the use of strong medicines to treat cancer. It has been used for many years and is one of the most common treatments for cancer. In most cases, chemo damages the cancer cell's ability to grow and spread. Different groups of medicines work in different ways to fight cancer.

Hormones are chemicals made by glands, such as the ovaries and testicles. Hormones help some types of cancer cells grow, such as breast cancer and prostate cancer. In other cases, hormones can kill cancer cells, slow their growth, or stop them from growing.

Hysterectomy is surgery to remove the uterus. Your doctor may also remove one or both ovaries, and the fallopian tubes. In some cases, other parts of the reproductive system may be removed.

Immunotherapy may be used with other treatments to help them work better. It works best to treat early-stage cancers.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells. Radiation is a local treatment. This means it affects the cancer cells only in the area that's treated.

Get a second opinion on your cancer diagnosis

Decisions about your cancer care are important. Getting a second opinion not only provides more information about your condition, but it can help you feel more confident in the doctor and the care plan you choose. Consider getting a second opinion if:
  • Your diagnosis or prognosis is unclear
  • You’ve been told you have a rare or life-threatening condition
  • You would like to explore other treatment options
  • Your treatment options are costly or risky
  • You want to hear an opinion from another specialist
  • Your insurance requires a second opinion
