Caring for sudden, serious illness and injury in children
When an illness becomes more severe or your child has a major injury, it may be time to take your child to the ER. Don't delay getting the emergency care your child needs. Symptoms and signs that your child needs emergency care include:
- Bites and stings
- Blue face and lips or pale coloring
- Chest pain
- Fever
- Major injury or broken bone
- Seizure
- Severe allergic reaction
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea
- Trouble breathing
- Other serious illness or injury
When your child is having trouble breathing, it's important to seek emergency care right away. Signs of respiratory distress may include increased breathing rate; color changes in the lips, face or nails; noisy breathing or grunting; and retractions (chest sinking below the neck with each inhale). If your child is showing signs of respiratory distress, call 911 or go to the nearest ER.
