About Nicole A Turgeon, MD

Nicole Turgeon, MD, FACS, is a board-certified abdominal transplant surgeon and serves as Transplant Director of the Abdominal Transplant Center, a clinical partnership between Ascension Seton and UT Health Austin. She specializes in kidney and pancreas transplantation and provides advanced, patient-centered surgical care for individuals throughout the transplant process.

Dr. Turgeon is also a professor and Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. In addition, she serves as Chief of Abdominal Transplant Surgery at Dell Seton Medical Center.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Brown University and her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and a fellowship in multi-organ abdominal transplant surgery at the University of Wisconsin.

Before joining UT Health Austin and Dell Medical School to help establish the abdominal transplant program in Central Texas, Dr. Turgeon served on the faculty at Emory University, where she was a transplant surgeon, researcher, educator, and mentor. She also directed the Living Donor Program and helped expand Emory’s participation in the National Kidney Registry paired donor exchange program. In addition, she served as Surgical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Dr. Turgeon has held leadership roles in organ donation and transplant policy at both regional and national levels, including service with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and the American Society of Transplantation. Dr. Nicole Turgeon is also the former Director of Pancreas Transplantation at Emory University (2012-2019), Professor of Surgery.Her academic interests include organ donation and utilization, adult and pediatric kidney transplantation, pancreas transplantation, and HIV transplantation. She has also served as an investigator and principal investigator on multiple NIH-funded and other externally funded research grants.
