About Alireza A Shamshirsaz, MD
Alireza A. Shamshirsaz, MD, MHCM, FACOG, is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and fetal surgeon at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas. He serves as Director of the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center and Chief of the Division of Maternal–Fetal Medicine and Surgery. He is also a professor in the Department of Women’s Health at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, where he specializes in advanced fetal intervention, complex monochorionic pregnancies and placenta accreta spectrum disorders.

Dr. Shamshirsaz earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the University of Iowa, followed by a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Connecticut and an advanced fellowship in perinatal and fetal surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He later earned a Master of Health Care Management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Before joining Dell Children’s, Dr. Shamshirsaz led major fetal surgery programs at leading academic medical centers. At Baylor College of Medicine, he served as Chief of the Division of Fetal Therapy and Surgery, Co-Chair of the Fetal Center Steering Committee, and Co-Director of the Maternal-Fetal Surgery Program. He later joined Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he served as Chief of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Surgery and Director of the Maternal-Fetal Care Center.
Dr. Shamshirsaz holds prominent national and international leadership positions, including Chair of the Steering Committee for the North American Fetal Therapy Network (NAFTNet), leadership roles within the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), including Chair of its Education Committee, and board appointments with the International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis (ISPD). He also serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Editor-in-Chief of Pregnancy, the official journal of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
In addition to his international work in fetal surgery, Dr. Shamshirsaz is a co-founder of the Pan-American Society for Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS2). He has played a central role in defining contemporary PAS care, including the development of scientific committees, consensus research priorities, and multidisciplinary care frameworks for managing complex placenta accreta spectrum disorders.
With more than 350 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Shamshirsaz is internationally recognized for his contributions to fetal therapy, including innovations in fetoscopic surgery, complex twin interventions, fetal neural tube defect repair, EXIT procedures, and placenta accreta spectrum management. He has also helped establish fetal surgery programs and perform the first fetal surgeries in several countries across the Middle East, Africa, South America, and the United States.
During his tenure at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Shamshirsaz led major research initiatives in prenatal intervention and imaging and served as co-principal investigator on NIH-funded studies evaluating placental function and vascular architecture in monochorionic twin pregnancies.
