About Eric A Mayer, MD
Eric Kano Mayer, MD, is a dual board-certified physiatrist at Ascension Texas Spine and Scoliosis in Austin, Smithville, and Round Rock, Texas. Dr. Mayer specializes in the nonsurgical treatment of back pain, neck pain, and musculoskeletal disorders. As a physician, Dr. Mayer provides comprehensive, evidence-based care with expertise in interventional spine procedures, sports medicine, spine health, vertebral augmentation for traumatic fractures, functional restoration, neuromodulation, and clinical outcomes measurement.
Before joining Texas Spine and Scoliosis in 2018, Dr. Mayer spent 10 years at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, where he served as Associate Director of the Center for Spine Health. He has served in several leadership roles, including Center Director of Clinical Outcomes Clinical Transformation, helping advance quality improvement, patient outcomes, and value-based spine care.
Prior to Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Mayer practiced in the Dallas area, including three years at the nationally recognized Productive Rehabilitation Institute of Dallas for Ergonomics (PRIDE), where he specialized in helping patients with complex spinal injuries return to activity and work. He also practiced with a large orthopedic group in Plano, Texas.
Dr. Mayer earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2001 after graduating Cum Laude from Georgetown University with a bachelor's degree in 1995. He completed a surgical internship at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, followed by his Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency at Harvard Medical School/Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. He then completed fellowship training in Spine Medicine at Cleveland Clinic's Center for Spine Health and also holds a Certificate in Clinical Efficacy from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Board certified and recertified in both Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, Dr. Mayer has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters and has lectured extensively throughout North America. He remains actively involved in national medical organizations, including the North American Spine Society (NASS) and the American Medical Association (AMA), serving on multiple socio-economic and healthcare policy committees. He has also served as an advisor to organizations including the Spine Intervention Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons, and was a member of the Executive Editorial Board for the 6th Edition (2021 revised) of the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment.
Dr. Mayer has long been committed to physician education and advancing the field of spine medicine. Throughout his career, he has taught medical students, residents, and fellows including University of Texas Dell Medical School and Texas A&M and co-founded a nationwide Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine fellowship program with training sites across the United States.
Through his combination of clinical expertise, leadership, research, and education, Dr. Mayer is dedicated to helping patients restore function, reduce pain, and improve their quality of life through individualized, nonsurgical spine care.
