Eeric Truumees, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon at Ascension Texas Spine and Scoliosis in Austin, Texas. With more than 25 years of experience, he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, with particular expertise in complex cervical spine surgery, revision spine surgery, spinal cord compression, motion preservation and artificial disc replacement.

Dr. Truumees believes exceptional spine care begins by understanding the person—not just the MRI. Every patient has unique goals, lifestyles and expectations, and he is committed to developing individualized treatment plans through thoughtful discussion and shared decision-making. Whether caring for a patient with an urgent spinal injury or helping someone navigate chronic neck or back pain, his goal is always the same: to provide the safest, most effective treatment using the least invasive approach possible while empowering patients to make informed decisions about their care.

A graduate of the University of Virginia, Dr. Truumees earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Religious Studies before receiving his medical degree as a distinguished Bowman Scholar. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic and pursued advanced fellowship training in spine surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Prior to joining Texas Spine and Scoliosis in 2010, Dr. Truumees served as an attending spine surgeon at William Beaumont Hospital, where he was also clinical director of the Harold W. Gehring Center for Biomechanical Research and Implant Retrieval. Additionally, he held an appointment as adjunct faculty at Wayne State University’s Bioengineering Center, contributing to research in spinal biomechanics and implant technology.

Dedicated to advancing spine care through education, Dr. Truumees served as professor of Orthopaedic and Neurological Surgery at The University of Texas Dell Medical School, where he also led the Spine Subspecialty Program for the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency. Throughout his career, he has mentored medical students, residents and young surgeons while remaining actively involved in physician education around the world.

Dr. Truumees served as president of the North American Spine Society (NASS) in 2020 after years of leadership within the organization. He has also served on the NASS Board of Directors and held numerous leadership positions within the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, including editor-in-chief of AAOS Now. He currently serves as spine section editor for The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery Essential Surgical Techniques and has served on the editorial boards of several of the field’s leading journals.

Dr. Truumees remains actively involved in clinical research and innovation. He has participated in more than 15 NIH- and industry-sponsored multicenter clinical trials, authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and numerous textbook chapters, written two books, and delivered more than 200 national and international lectures.

Beyond his clinical and academic work, Dr. Truumees is committed to service. He has participated in medical mission trips to Ghana, mentored aspiring physicians, advocated for patients through national spine organizations and continues to collaborate with colleagues around the world to improve spine care.
