A Lifetime of Care at Ascension St. John
As Ascension St. John moves into its next century of care, we look back on the legacy of people that made it what it is today. For some, a career begins with a job offer. For Jane Hahn, it began with a calling.
Jane’s story with St. John goes back quite a ways. It actually began on her very first day of life—she was born here. So, in many ways, her history with this place started before she could even remember it.
Later in life, her husband, Don Hahn, was recruited to St. John to practice primary care. He eventually finished his career working in urgent care. Because of her role, she spent a lot of time interacting with Ascension Medical Group clinics, and one of her favorite parts was getting to visit the clinics where her husband happened to be working. It gave them little moments together during the workday. Years later, that is something she will always cherish.
Your relationship with Ascension St. John became even more personal later in life. Can you tell us about that experience?
It happened during what was supposed to be a celebration. We had traveled to Disney World for our anniversary when everything changed. My husband suffered a stroke.
Suddenly, he was in the intensive care unit, and we had no idea how long we would be there or what the future would look like.
It was one of the most frightening times of our lives.
How did your Ascension St. John family support you during that difficult time?
What I didn't know was that, back in Tulsa, people were already stepping in to help.
On Friday afternoon, our co-president at the time called and said, "We're coming to get you. We're coming to get Don. Don't worry about it."
That meant everything.
While I was focused on my husband, person after person was working behind the scenes, taking care of all the details so we could get home. I didn't have to figure it all out alone.
I'll never forget the moment our plane landed at Tulsa International Airport. As soon as we touched the ground, tears came to my eyes.
It wasn't just relief that we were home—it was the peace of knowing exactly where we were going and who would be caring for Don. There was never any question in my mind about the care he would receive because I knew the people at Ascension St. John.
How did that experience shape your connection to the organization?
It deepened it in every way.
After we came home, I cared for Don for about six years before he passed away in 2022. It was a difficult chapter, but throughout it all, Ascension St. John was more than my workplace.
This was my family.
This was my support system.
The people here surrounded me with compassion, encouragement and love during one of the hardest seasons of my life.
What does Ascension St. John mean to you today?
To me, Ascension St. John is truly about caring—and caring with love and God's guidance.
I honestly believe that there's not a thing that happens here without God's presence.
That's what makes this place different. It's not just the medicine or the technology. It's the people, the faith and the mission that guide every interaction.
I've been incredibly fortunate to spend so much of my life connected to Ascension St. John—from being born here, to building a career here, to relying on this community when my family needed it most.
It's been a wonderful experience, and I can't imagine working anywhere else.
