A second chance after spine surgery in Jacksonville

mayo 27, 2026

At Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside in Jacksonville, Florida, a local resident regained independence after spine surgery and rehabilitation with care from neurosurgeon Dr. Ali Chahlavi.

For Elmer S., ongoing back pain gradually worsened into severe pain, weakness, and difficulty walking. Over time, the pressure on his spinal nerves became so significant that it limited his mobility and independence, turning everyday activities into major challenges. Eventually, Elmer’s symptoms escalated to the point where he required emergency care in Jacksonville, Florida.

As his condition progressed, he sought care with neurosurgeon, Dr. Ali Chahlavi, at Ascension St. Vincent's Advanced Brain & Spine Neurosurgery - Southside. There, he was diagnosed with a pinched nerve at the lower spine (L4-5 vertebral level) due to a cyst and arthritis. His diagnosis included lumbar spondylosis, stenosis with neurogenic claudication, and a synovial cyst. Surgery was recommended to relieve the pressure and alleviate his pain.

With more than 20 years of experience and expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery, Dr. Chahlavi gave Elmer confidence in his path forward.

Under Dr. Chahlavi's care, Elmer underwent surgery with trust in his care team. “Dr. Chahlavi was really great,” he shared.

Prior to surgery, the pain had been overwhelming, but following the procedure, Elmer began to experience relief and renewed hope for recovery.Once the surgery was completed, Elmer transitioned to inpatient rehabilitation at Ascension St. Vincent’s, where his recovery journey continued. From the moment he arrived, he noticed a difference. “It felt like a completely different world,” he said. “Some of the best, sweetest, nicest nurses and therapists.”

Through consistent therapy and encouragement, Elmer steadily regained strength and independence. Each day brought progress. “I’m now able to get around and do everything by myself,” he said proudly.

The care team left a lasting impression on Elmer. While he found it difficult to name just one person, he shared his appreciation. “I would have to name everyone, but my nurse KJ has been really great,” he said.

He described the team as compassionate and deeply committed to their patients. “They took care of me like I was family. These nurses have a passion for what they do, and as a patient, you can feel that.”

Elmer also recognized what made this experience different. “St. Vincent’s is my home hospital,” he said. “I’ve been to other rehabs before, but nothing like this. If I had to come back, it would be here and nowhere else.”

As he prepares to leave, Elmer carries with him not only improved mobility and independence, but also deep gratitude for the team who supported him every step of the way. “They keep you motivated and don’t let you give up,” he said. “I’ve already told all my friends this is the place to go.”

Throughout his recovery, one thought kept Elmer motivated returning home to his wife of 68 years. “I get to go home soon,” he said. “We can’t wait to see each other.”

If you or your loved one is experiencing back pain or may need spine surgery, Dr. Chahlavi is here to help you find relief, regain strength and return to what matters most.
