This Veterans Day, Ascension Seton and Ascension Providence honor the veterans who are part of the communities we serve.
Across Central Texas, we are thankful to work alongside associates, providers and volunteers who have served in the United States Armed Forces. These individuals bring the same sense of duty, integrity and compassion to their work in healthcare that they demonstrated in service to our nation. At Ascension Texas, our mission calls us to care for all persons, with special attention to those who are most vulnerable. That same spirit of selflessness and service is reflected in the lives of our veteran associates.
“I’ve always felt called to serve something greater than myself and that’s what initially drew me to the military,” said Chief Strategy Officer of Ascension Texas and U.S. Army & National Guard veteran, John Thresher. “After leaving active duty, I’ve found that same sense of purpose here at Ascension. The mission-driven culture feels familiar – it reminds me of the military in the best way.”
The dedication and teamwork that define military service are qualities that strengthen our ministry every day. Veterans across Ascension Seton and Ascension Providence contribute their leadership, problem-solving and compassion in countless ways—from caring for patients at the bedside to supporting clinical teams, leading departments or serving in administrative and operational roles.
“Attention to detail, thoughtful leadership, and resourcefulness are essential, but so is the ability to thrive in ambiguity,” said Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease at Dell Children's Medical Center director and U.S. Army Sergeant veteran, Joel Wise. “Those qualities help us provide the best care for our patients and support one another through every challenge.”
For many, Veterans Day is not only a time to remember and reflect, but also a reminder of our ongoing responsibility to support those who have served. Within our hospitals and clinics, associates often share stories of camaraderie and connection that transcend military branches and backgrounds. These conversations remind us of the profound impact of community, empathy and shared purpose—the same values that guide our care.
“My military experience taught me to lead by example and to care for the well-being of my fellow associates,” said Octaviano Gallegos, laundry room manager at Ascension Providence and U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
As part of the Ascension family, we are united by a mission that goes beyond medicine—one that seeks to bring hope, healing and compassion to every person we encounter. Our veterans embody this mission each day, serving with humility, grace and a steadfast commitment to others.
This Veterans Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to all who have served in the Armed Forces—past and present—and to their families, whose sacrifices make that service possible. Your dedication, courage and compassion inspire us all. Thank you for your service to our country and for continuing to serve our communities with the same strength and spirit.
