How a new procedure helps women with heavy periods

octubre 24, 2025

Ascension Wisconsin is the first in the state to offer the new minimally invasive cryoablation treatment to help women who experience heavy menstrual bleeding.

Heavy menstrual bleeding affects many women and can take a toll on your daily life. From missing work and social events to dealing with fatigue and discomfort every month, heavy periods can disrupt your routine, lower your energy and make it harder to enjoy moments that matter. Ascension Wisconsin OB-GYNs, offer a minimally invasive treatment, when medications or hormonal therapies don’t provide enough relief. Cerene® cryoablation is a minimally invasive treatment that uses cooling technology to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. Ascension Wisconsin is the first in the state to offer this new technology.

“Advanced cryotherapy is transforming how we treat heavy periods by allowing us to prioritize patient comfort before, during, and after the procedure. We are proud to be the first practice in the area to offer this treatment and reinforce our commitment to our patients,” shared Dr. Steven Bush, OB-GYN and Medical Director of the Women and Family Service Line at Ascension Wisconsin.

What is Cerene® cryoablation?

Cerene® cryoablation treats the tissue within the lining of the uterus that causes heavy bleeding by using a device that is inserted into the uterus. The device uses freezing technology to treat your condition. The outpatient procedure can be performed right in your doctor’s office and most patients return to normal activities within a day or two. After the treatment, many women experience lighter periods, or no bleeding at all within a few months.

The Cerene® procedure typically takes less than 15 minutes. You may feel mild cramping during treatment, but most patients describe the experience as very manageable, because it uses cooling rather than heat, many report less discomfort during and after the procedure compared to traditional ablation methods.

Light bleeding or discharge can occur for a short time afterward. Your doctor will give you specific instructions for recovery and follow-up care.

Treatment that’s right for you

Cerene® cryoablation is used to treat women who are finished having children and want a safe, effective option to reduce or stop heavy bleeding. Before recommending it, your doctor will review your medical history, perform any needed tests and discuss whether this treatment is a good fit for your goals.
