After second kidney transplant, Pensacola man thrives post-transplant

Frederick H., 40, knows firsthand how life-changing a kidney transplant can be, especially the second time around.

In 2023, Frederick received his first deceased donor kidney at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola under the care of Dr. Douglas Keith, transplant nephrologist, and the kidney transplant care team. While the transplant did not go as hoped and required immediate follow-up care, Frederick’s journey didn’t end there.

What stands out most during that time wasn’t just the complexity of his medical case, it was the unwavering support he received from the transplant team.

“Frederick went through a challenging experience, but we stayed connected every step of the way,” said Dr. Keith. “We wanted to make sure he felt fully supported, not just medically, but emotionally as well.”

With time, Frederick regained his strength and found the confidence to pursue another transplant.

Later that same year, he received a second kidney, this time with a successful outcome.

Today, Frederick is thriving. He’s back to his active lifestyle, often seen working out at the gym and sharing his story with others who may be navigating their own transplant journey.

“Frederick’s outlook on life is remarkable,” said Dr. Keith. “He’s a source of inspiration for our team and for the transplant community. His willingness to give back and support others is part of what makes his story so powerful.”

Frederick has even participated in a bell-ringing ceremony at Ascension Sacred Heart, a symbol of a new beginning after a successful transplant.
