Eric Kano Mayer, MD, is a dual board-certified, experienced physiatrist (physical medicine specialist) at Ascension Texas Spine and Scoliosis in Austin, Smithville, and Round Rock, Texas. He specializes in the nonsurgical treatment of back and neck pain, with expertise in interventional spine procedures, spine health, sports medicine, functional restoration and clinical outcomes measurement.

Prior to joining Ascension Texas Spine and Scoliosis in 2018, Dr. Mayer spent 10 years at Cleveland Clinic, where he served as Associate Director of the Center for Spine Health. He also held a dual appointment in the Center for Neurological Restoration and served in leadership positions in clinical outcomes and clinical transformation, including as Center Director of Clinical Outcomes and Associate Director for Clinical Transformation.

Before his time at Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Mayer practiced in Dallas, Texas, including three years at the Productive Rehabilitation Institute of Dallas for Ergonomics (PRIDE), a center known for helping patients with complex back injuries return to activity and work. He also practiced with a large orthopedic group in Plano.

Dr. Mayer is dual board-certified in physical medicine & rehabilitation and sports medicine, and completed fellowship training in Spine Medicine at Cleveland Clinic. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed a surgical internship at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He then completed his residency training at Harvard Medical School/Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Mayer has authored numerous scientific papers and book chapters and has lectured throughout North America. He has served in leadership roles within professional medical societies and has taught medical students, residents, and fellows. He also co-founded a nationwide Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine fellowship program with training sites across the United States.

Dr. Mayer has completed advanced training in electromyography (EMG) and neurophysiology at Mayo Clinic and represents the North American Spine Society in work related to physician reimbursement and healthcare policy.

When not caring for patients, Dr. Mayer enjoys spending time with his wife and four children. Together, they attend church and enjoy hiking, snow skiing and paddling. He also participates in a local soccer league and volunteers in medical outreach efforts throughout the United States and Central America.
