Ascension Sacred Heart is launching Northwest Florida’s first Mobile Stroke Unit, bringing advanced stroke diagnostics and time-sensitive care directly to rural communities.
When a stroke occurs, every minute matters. In fact, nearly two million brain cells can be lost for every minute treatment is delayed. For rural communities, travel time to a regional hospital can mean the difference between full recovery and long-term disability.
To help bridge this gap, Ascension Sacred Heart is launching Northwest Florida’s first Mobile Stroke Unit (MSU). Made possible by a $2.4 million investment—part of a broader $7.25 million award to Ascension Florida through the state’s Rural Health Transformation Program—this custom-built emergency vehicle will bring advanced diagnostic technology, specialized expertise, and immediate treatment directly to patients in North Walton County and surrounding rural communities.
How the Mobile Stroke Unit Transforms Emergency Care
Traditional emergency responses require transporting patients to a hospital before diagnostic imaging and targeted stroke treatment can begin. The Mobile Stroke Unit turns that process inside out by operating as an emergency department on wheels equipped with specialized imaging technology.
