High school students in Central Texas had the opportunity to gain professional healthcare experience and mentorship at Ascension Seton through the Ann Richards School Junior Internship Program.

Nineteen students from the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders joined Ascension Seton this year for the Ann Richards Internship Program, an experiential learning opportunity aimed to support high school students as they explore future career pathways, build professional skills and gain real-world workplace exposure.

Internship Week Provides Real-World Experience

At Ascension Seton, our Mission calls us to serve individuals and communities while creating opportunities that support long-term health, well-being and hope for future generations. Through programs like the Ann Richards Internship Program, Ascension Seton is investing in students by empowering the next generation of leaders through mentorship and hands-on learning experiences.

As part of the program, juniors from the Ann Richards School participated in Internship Week, where students were placed across a variety of departments and specialties to experience professional environments firsthand, including imaging, patient floors, respiratory therapy and case management. Throughout the week, students gained insight into careers in healthcare, business, technology and other professional fields while strengthening workplace readiness skills such as professional communication, networking, interviewing and workplace etiquette.

Students also had the opportunity to learn directly from Ascension Seton care teams and leaders who served as mentors throughout the experience, helping students build confidence while encouraging them to envision future possibilities for themselves and their communities.

“Our investment in early talent is helping shape the future healthcare workforce while creating opportunities for students to see themselves in these careers,” said Dena Shirley, Workforce Development Manager. “Programs like this allow students to gain meaningful exposure, build confidence and connect with associates who can help guide and inspire them along the way.”

Celebrating Student Success at the “Reach for the Stars” Gala

The week before Internship Week began, Ascension Seton sponsored the “Reach for the Stars” Gala, an event designed to celebrate and kickoff the upcoming senior internship experience while recognizing students preparing to take the next step in their professional journeys.

Among those attending was Brenda Herrera, Associate Manager of Dell Children’s North and alum of the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, whose own experience in the program helped shape her career path and commitment to serving others:

“I believe the Ann Richards Internship Program opened doors for me as a young woman with dreams of making an impact,” Brenda said. “The internship not only helped shape the career I have today, but it also ignited my drive to give back to my community. Now, as a professional returning to the same organization I once admired, I am able to fulfill that commitment every day by ensuring the necessary resources reach our patients — a true full-circle moment.”

Career Exploration Event Engages More Than 900 Students

Leading up to Internship Week, more than 900 students joined Ascension Seton for a Career Exploration Event focused on learning, connection and inspiration. Through interactive career stations, wellness activities, yoga sessions and discussions about internet safety, students explored opportunities for both personal and professional growth.

The event reflected Ascension’s commitment to supporting the whole person while living out our Values of reverence, wisdom and dedication. Associates and community partners volunteered throughout the day to encourage students, answer questions and help create meaningful experiences centered on growth, leadership and community support.

Investing in the Future Workforce

“The goal is to invest in talent within our community and help create pathways for students to continue thriving both personally and professionally,” Shirley said. “When students can see what’s possible for them, it can have a lasting impact not only on their future, but on the future of our communities as well.”

By supporting programs like the Ann Richards Internship Program, Ascension Seton continues its mission of improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities while helping bring health, healing and hope to future generations.
