Breast health is important as you age. As our bodies mature, so does our need to stay well.

Christina J. Kim, MD, breast surgical oncologist at Ascension St. Vincent in Fishers has treated many patients diagnosed with breast cancer. She shares the importance of maintaining annual mammograms as you age. Dr. Kim’s gives her perspective on the importance of breast cancer care for women over 50:

From the moment a patient in her 50s walks in, I can see she had a full life, even in her advanced years. One patient in particular was sharp, independent and very active, with a wonderful sense of humor and a deep love for her family. My first thought was, “What is your secret?”

Just a few weeks earlier, she had discovered a lump in her breast. She immediately saw her primary care physician, who sent her for a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. Unfortunately, her tests revealed breast cancer.

When someone is diagnosed with breast cancer, I have very clear goals: to figure out the least invasive option for effectively treating the cancer, helping my patient through surgery safely and getting them back to their life as quickly and effortlessly as possible.

Comprehensive and personalized breast cancer care in Indiana

At Ascension St. Vincent Fishers, we believe breast cancer treatment should be comprehensive and personalized. We start by answering your questions and making sure that you understand the next steps. Your team of breast surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists and genetic counselors will then work together with you to create a customized treatment plan. You can also request genetic testing. While it won’t significantly change your treatment, it may help your children and grandchildren better understand their potential hereditary risks.

Monitoring breast health the same after age 50

More than ever, people are living longer and staying active. That’s why it is so important to pay attention to your body as you age. Even after age 50, you should still follow the screening guidelines that recommend yearly mammograms starting at age 40 — and even earlier for women with a family history or other risk factors for breast cancer.

We encourage you to take an active role in your health through home breast exams and routine breast screenings and checkups. Taking charge of your breast health can make all the difference — and we’re here to help you every step of the way.
