Longtime kidney disease patient finds relief with a transplant
At Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola, Dr. Douglas Keith, Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program, performed a kidney transplant in 2020 that helped a patient return to a healthy, active lifestyle.
In 2004, at 17 years old, Christine never expected a routine day at school to lead to a life-changing diagnosis. After experiencing concerning symptoms, she learned she had Dense Deposit Disease, a rare kidney condition that can lead to kidney failure. A kidney transplant would be in her future.
While the diagnosis was overwhelming, Christine remained determined to move forward. Over the years, she pursued treatment and stayed resilient through each step of her journey.
Her path eventually led her to Dr. Douglas Keith, Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola, Florida. Known for his thoughtful and personalized approach, Dr. Keith carefully evaluated Christine’s case and saw an opportunity to help her move forward with confidence.
“We take the time to look at every patient individually,” said Dr. Keith. “In Christine’s case, we believed there was a path forward that could lead to a meaningful, long-term outcome.”
With a clear plan and a care team she trusted, Christine moved forward with a kidney transplant at Ascension Sacred Heart.
Her recovery marked a turning point.
“I started feeling better so quickly,” she said. “It truly felt like a second chance.”
Since her transplant, Christine has remained closely connected with Dr. Keith and her care team through regular follow-ups. She continues to do well, an encouraging outcome for someone with her condition.
Today, more than five years later, Christine is living a full and active life. She works full-time, enjoys time with her daughter, and stays engaged in the moments that matter most.
“This transplant gave me my life back,” she said. “I can be there for my daughter and just enjoy life again.”
She also reflects on the care she received along the way.
“They made me feel supported every step of the way,” Christine said. “That meant everything to me.”
Christine’s journey highlights the impact of personalized, specialized care. At Ascension Sacred Heart, Dr. Keith and the kidney transplant team are committed to helping patients navigate complex conditions with expertise, compassion, and hope.
