After a routine gynecology visit revealed stage three cervical cancer, Kristina began treatment with Martin Martino, MD, gynecologic oncologist at Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside in Jacksonville, Florida.

Kristina scheduled a gynecology appointment when she began trying to have a baby. During her visit she was referred to Martin Martino, MD, gynecologic oncologist at Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside, who discovered a large tumor covering her cervix. He performed a biopsy, and within days, Kristina received life-changing news: stage three cervical cancer.

Kristina, 33, considered herself healthy. She had no symptoms, no warning signs, and no reason to think anything was wrong. Like many Millennial women, she admits she had not consistently scheduled regular Pap smears or annual checkups.

“The whole thing was very fast,” Kristina said. “It was overwhelming how quickly everything happened.”

Cervical cancer can progress without clear warning signs, which is why regular screenings are important. After diagnosing stage three cervical cancer, Dr. Martino promptly began a comprehensive treatment plan designed to effectively treat the cancer and support Kristina’s future health.

Kristina began treatment almost immediately, including a combination of therapies designed to target the cancer effectively. For three months, she attended every appointment and followed her treatment plan with determination. Her friends and family stood by her side, and the care team at Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside supported her every step of the way.

Through it all, Kristina credits Dr. Martino for guiding her forward.

“Without Dr. Martino leading the way, I wouldn’t have known what to do next,” she said. “There was so much being thrown at me, and he always had a plan.”

Kristina built a strong connection with Dr. Martino and his team. They made her feel supported, informed, and confident in her care.

“They treated me like family,” she said. “They were always ten steps ahead with their plans.”

Dr. Martino focused not only on treating her cancer but also on protecting her future. Early in her diagnosis, he encouraged her to consider fertility preservation, an option she had not yet thought about but now deeply appreciates.

“He pushed me to think about my future,” she said. “Because of that, I still have options.”

Kristina describes Dr. Martino’s office as her safe place.

“Going to see Dr. Martino was always my favorite appointment,” she said. “I knew I would leave feeling encouraged and hopeful.”

Today, Kristina feels stronger than ever and views life with renewed gratitude.

“It’s been a victory,” she said. “I truly believe this would have been a different story without my faith, my family, and my incredible doctors.”

Her journey reminds young women that cervical cancer can develop without symptoms—and that regular screenings and trusted medical care can make all the difference.
