Volunteer finds joy and purpose in giving back

Ascension St. Vincent’s St. Johns County hospital volunteer Susan Schroder has transformed her grief from losing her husband into a mission of kindness and compassion, inspired by the care her late husband received in St. Johns County, Florida.

Susan’s husband Robert received care at the hospital over a six month period from multiple departments, primarily ER and Inpatient. She recalls many moments of compassionate care from team members, like Kristi, a radiology technician, checking on them repeatedly in the ER., and Albert, another associate, who would send up an extra cup of coffee daily, knowing Susan was always there. 

"We never could have expected the wonderful care that he got, and that I got,” Susan shared. “There isn't a single person there that isn't blessed for what they do. It marked me for life."

Before Robert’s passing, leaders honored him by showing up in Hawaiian shirts, a staple in his wardrobe. Nursing care teams also honored his memory by wearing eye masks gifted by Susan. 

After taking time to grieve, Susan decided she wanted to give patients the same level of support she received. She now volunteers with the same nurses that cared for her family and also uses her artistic talents to create greeting cards.

"I try to be there for patients and their families,” said Susan. “Making sure they have everything they need, whether it’s water, an extra blanket or a get well soon message. That gives me joy. I know my husband would have been very proud of this."

She emphasized that volunteering is not one-sided. “I may not go in to volunteer for a couple weeks, then I come in and I’m given a big hug. People genuinely care here. I’m doing good emotionally because I’m giving back, but I’m also getting so much back in return."

The compassionate care at Ascension St. Vincent left an impact on Susan’s, and shows the healing power of giving back to one’s community.
