Uterine cancer survivor chooses care at St. Vincent’s
At Ascension St. Vincent’s in Jacksonville, Dr. Martin Martino helped an 88-year-old woman from Orange Park overcome uterine cancer through compassionate, personalized care and advanced treatment.
When Josephine (Jo) from Orange Park, Florida, first began feeling unwell, she couldn’t identify what was wrong. “I just didn’t feel like myself,” she said. “I never expected any of my issues to be cancer.”
At 88, she was living a healthy life and spending time with her family. After a series of evaluations and a CT scan, doctors discovered a mass. Her hematologist, a blood cancer specialist, referred her to Dr. Martin Martino, gynecologic oncologist at Ascension St. Vincent's Gynecology Oncology and Advanced Women's Health - Riverside.
Following further testing, Josephine was diagnosed with uterine cancer, a type of cancer that begins in the lining of the uterus. Treatment for uterine cancer often involves surgical removal of the uterus, which is called a hysterectomy, sometimes combined with targeted therapy, chemotherapy, or radiation, depending on the stage and type of cancer.
Under Dr. Martino’s care, Josephine underwent a personalized treatment plan designed to address her specific diagnosis while supporting her overall well-being. Dr. Martino and his multidisciplinary team guided her through every stage of treatment with compassion and precision.
“The care here is amazing,” Josephine said. “I never expected to have access to so much care.”
As her treatment progressed, Josephine began to notice a remarkable difference and so did her family. Her daughters commented on how much better she looked and how her energy had returned. Josephine agreed, saying, “I didn’t only feel better physically, but I truly believed that I was better due to the great care that Dr. Martino gave me.”
Today, Josephine is focused on recovery and grateful for the renewed strength she feels. Her story shows the importance of early detection, expert care, and the dedication of the team at Ascension St. Vincent’s who helped her heal.
