Uterine cancer survivor chooses care at St. Vincent’s

When Josephine (Jo) from Orange Park, Florida, first began feeling unwell, she couldn’t identify what was wrong. “I just didn’t feel like myself,” she said. “I never expected any of my issues to be cancer.”

At 88, she was living a healthy life and spending time with her family. After a series of evaluations and a CT scan, doctors discovered a mass. Her hematologist, a blood cancer specialist, referred her to Dr. Martin Martino, gynecologic oncologist at Ascension St. Vincent's Gynecology Oncology and Advanced Women's Health - Riverside.

Following further testing, Josephine was diagnosed with uterine cancer, a type of cancer that begins in the lining of the uterus. Treatment for uterine cancer often involves surgical removal of the uterus, which is called a hysterectomy, sometimes combined with targeted therapy, chemotherapy, or radiation, depending on the stage and type of cancer.
