After a spine cancer diagnosis, Mr. Santorelli turned to Dr. Stephen Parker, neurosurgeon, and the care team at Ascension St. Vincent’s in Jacksonville, Florida, for spinal surgery and rehabilitation to find relief from pain and regain strength and independence.

When Mr. Santorelli arrived at Ascension St. Vincent’s in Jacksonville, Florida, he faced a serious health challenge. Cancer affecting his vertebrae caused intense pain and limited his mobility, ultimately leading him to surgery and the start of a recovery journey. From the very beginning of his care, he felt a sense of hope. With the right care, support, and determination, he began taking meaningful steps toward healing.

Dr. Stephen Parker, a neurosurgeon at Ascension St. Vincent’s Spine & Brain Neurosurgery – Southside, began Mr. Santorelli’s treatment. Dr. Parker specializes in spine surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and tumor surgery of the brain and spine. He performed a procedure that addressed the cancer on his vertebrae and prepared Mr. Santorelli for the next critical phase of healing: rehabilitation.

Determined to return to his active lifestyle, Mr. Santorelli began working with the compassionate caregivers in the inpatient rehabilitation unit. They helped him with everyday tasks like bathing, dressing, and moving from his bed to a chair. More than delivering clinical care, they offered him dignity, kindness, and encouragement at every step.

The rehabilitation team at Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside developed a personalized care plan focused on restoring his strength, mobility, and confidence. Through physical and occupational therapy, motivation, and a supportive environment, Mr. Santorelli steadily reclaimed his independence.

He described his experience as “wonderful” and felt visibly moved when he spoke about the team’s impact. He praised Eric and Oliver for their support and credited his occupational therapist, Alison, for her lasting influence. “Even when she wasn’t in the room, I could hear her reminding me to stay safe and keep going,” he shared.

Today, Mr. Santorelli cares for himself again and grows stronger each day. “I don’t know where I would be without the care I received here,” he said.

Ascension St. Vincent’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility was named by Newsweek as one of America's Best Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Centers for 2025.
