Innovative frozen shoulder treatment helps Navarre patient regain mobility
Sports medicine doctor Dr. Tyler Schmitz performed a new shoulder procedure at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola, Florida, helping a Navarre patient quickly regain mobility after months of pain and stiffness.
For seven months, Tonya R., from Navarre, Florida, lived with constant shoulder pain. Getting dressed, lifting everyday items, even fixing her hair became nearly impossible. She tried everything including MRIs, ultrasounds, chiropractic visits, and multiple specialists, but nothing brought answers or relief.
Her turning point came when she met Dr. Mark Elliott, orthopedic surgeon at Ascension Sacred Heart Sports Medicine. He quickly recognized her condition as “frozen shoulder,” a condition that causes pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint, limiting its range of motion. He referred her to Dr. Tyler Schmitz, a sports medicine doctor, for treatment.
Dr. Schmitz performed a novel non-surgical procedure that he developed called a glenohumeral joint hydrodilation procedure. This is a minimally invasive office-based procedure that requires a nerve block and is followed by a high volume injection with saline into the shoulder joint that stretches and frees up the tight shoulder. This restores mobility and provides pain relief without the need for anesthesia and surgery. Tonya started physical therapy the very next day and within two weeks, she could move her arm freely again.
“The difference was life-changing,” Tonya said. “After months of pain and frustration, I could finally do the simple things again on my own.”
Dr. Schmitz explained, “Frozen shoulder can be frustrating because it limits even the most basic movements. With the right diagnosis and newly developed in-office treatment options, patients often regain mobility quickly with physical therapy. Tonya is a great example of a patient who committed to physical therapy and had a great outcome because of her dedication.”
Tonya praised both doctors for their bedside manner and thorough care. She also appreciated the support of the clinic staff, who guided her every step of the way. Now preparing for a move to Colorado, she says she is leaving Florida grateful and pain free.
