Support fuels 90-pound nonsurgical weight loss with Via Christi Weight Management
Ascension Via Christi Weight Management in Wichita, KS, helped a patient transform his health with a 90 pound weight loss and a new outlook on life.
For 58-year-old Mike Westerman, weight has always been a part of his life. "I've been heavy since high school, and I just accepted it," Mike recalled. Growing up in Valley Center, Kansas, and working as a behavioral support specialist and consumer living trainer, Mike was used to putting others first, helping ensure they had what they needed. But the extra weight had taken a toll on his body and his health.
After two knee replacements and a hip replacement, Mike knew he had to make a change. "I kept trying different diets – Atkins, Weight Watchers – but nothing stuck. It was frustrating. I felt like if I didn’t get the weight off, I wouldn’t make it to retirement," she shared.
Building healthy habits to lose weight
Mike was determined to explore other options. He even considered gastric bypass surgery, but at $21,000 out of pocket, it seemed out of reach. Then, he came across Via Christi’s Non-Surgical Weight Management Program, and everything changed.
Phase 1 focuses on structured meal and physical activity plans, education, and weekly support through group classes led by experienced health educators. Using the program’s Health Management Resources (HMR) meal replacement products, including shakes and entrees along with fruit and vegetables, participants strategize eating healthy choices and tracking food intake and physical activity.
“I found HMR online and talked to the program’s coach, Suzanne Neville. I’ve always been someone who thrives on accountability, so I knew I needed that support.”
In just the first month, Mike lost 15 pounds by sticking to phase one of the program, which includes structured meals and guidance. “I love vegetables, and the program helped me stay full and still lose weight. I joined the Y and got gung-ho with exercise, even though it meant commuting to the gym.”
Week after week, the pounds continued to drop. Mike has now lost 90 pounds. “I never thought I’d be in a position where I was buying new clothes or getting my wedding ring resized. I feel healthier, and I’m still losing weight.”
For Mike, the journey has been about much more than just the number on the scale. “The accountability I’ve had with my coach, Suzanne Neville, has been a godsend. She’s constantly texting me new recipes and ways to get excited about food again. It’s really changed my life.”
A weight-loss program that creates lifestyle changes
Mike’s faith has played a central role in his journey. “Christ is the center of my life. If I had waited, I wouldn’t have jumped into this program. I thank the Lord every day for what it’s done for me.”
As someone who’s always been dedicated to serving others, Mike now feels that he can serve them even better because of how much better he feels about himself. "My attitude has completely changed. I feel more sympathetic to those I serve, and I have more energy to enjoy my life, my grandkids, and my family."
Of course, the journey wasn’t always easy. “In the beginning, it was a struggle to lay off old habits and stick to phase one. But I learned to be happy with my meals, and I realized that a Blizzard isn’t worth it. I never thought I’d have that attitude before."
Now, Mike enjoys grilling vegetables, and he proudly calls himself the “Vegetable King,” consuming up to 70 servings a week. “Everything is in moderation now, and I’ve learned not to waste food. I still enjoy steak, but I keep my portions in check."
At 249 pounds, down from 340, Mike is determined to keep going. “I’ve dropped four pant sizes, and I’m sticking with this to see how far it takes me. I’ll be doing HMR for the rest of my life because it’s a lifestyle now. If it’s important to you, you’ve got to trust the program, trust yourself, and stick with it.”
Mike’s advice to anyone thinking about making a change? "Try new things. Don’t get frustrated. You can make your goals if you stay focused. I thank the Lord every day for what this program has given me – it’s truly been a life-changing experience.”
