Legendary musician John McEuen, a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and a 2017 inductee into the American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame, is celebrating a second chance at life, thanks to the expert cardiac care he received at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West.

In April, McEuen's life took an unexpected turn when he passed out behind the wheel at a stoplight, leading to a minor accident. His wife, Marilyn was wearing a smartwatch that called 911 to the scene, and emergency responders rushed him to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West as his condition deteriorated.

“My heart stopped for 30 seconds and then I had another heart attack,” John said. “That is when they said they were taking me to Saint Thomas.” After tests were run, he found out his heart’s arteries were almost completely blocked. Surgery was the only option to save his life.

This was the first hospital stay for the 78-year-old. He would go on to spend the next 17 days in intensive care after having triple-bypass surgery. What could have been a harrowing experience became one of reassurance and exceptional care for the iconic musician.

John credits his medical team, led by cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Clayton Kaiser and cardiac electrophysiologist, Dr. David Beavers and cardiologist, Dr. Matthew DeShazo for their personal attention. "Everybody treated me wonderfully, and it felt like I was the only patient there," he said.

His experience was further marked by an extraordinary coincidence: his anesthesiologist for the operation, Dr. Jesse Scruggs, was the grandson of bluegrass pioneer musician Earl Scruggs, a fellow banjo player and friend.

Following his surgery, McEuen also praised the hospital’s rehabilitation team for their role in his recovery. "Everyone on the rehab staff was wonderful. Most have been there for 20 or 30 years, and you can tell they love what they do,” he added.

On Oct. 27, John will be honored for his work as an artist with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Opry House during the 10th Annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. Reflecting on this milestone, he expressed profound gratitude. "What’s bigger than that award is that I’m alive to receive it," he said.

McEuen, who has traveled the world as a performer, believes the exceptional care he received as a patient at Ascension Saint Thomas West stands out. "It’s not just hospital care—it's mission-driven. Everybody in the hospital shares in that mission."

As he prepares to accept his lifetime achievement award, McEuen has one message for the staff at Ascension Saint Thomas West: "Thanks for giving me my life back—and making it continue for years to come."
