Foley woman receives life-saving treatment for brain blood clot at Ascension Sacred Heart

Barbara N., an active community member from Foley, Alabama, never imagined that a typical day of volunteering at a bible study would end with her being in a neurosciences ICU. While walking outside, Barbara suddenly felt unwell and experienced difficulty walking and speaking. Her coworker, concerned for her well-being, helped Barbara inside and called 911. 

Barbara was transferred to The Advanced Brain and Spine Institute at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola, where the comprehensive neurology care team took over. She vividly recalls, “I remember being greeted at the emergency doors by [neurologist] Dr. Charles Schutt.” Diagnosed with a large vessel stroke due to a blood clot in her brain, Barbara underwent a thrombectomy performed by neurosurgeon Dr. Maria Toledo, who successfully removed the blockage and restored blood flow to her brain.

Barbara’s husband noted that “within an hour or so after surgery, Barbara’s speech and mobility began to improve significantly.” 

Barbara has praised the care she received at Sacred Heart, stating, “They made my medical experience a lot less traumatic and truly cared about my well-being.” Feeling optimistic about her future, she looks forward to her appointment with both Dr. Schutt and Dr. Brown at their collaborative neurocardiology clinic, which provides comprehensive treatment through collaborative neurology and cardiology care.

Now, Barbara is getting back to enjoying yoga, long walks, and returning to her daily activities. She remains grateful for the ongoing care from the entire neurosciences care team at Sacred Heart Pensacola.
