Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mark Elliott helps a former hospice nurse find pain relief with a shoulder repair surgery at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola, FL.

Connie J., a former hospice nurse from Pensacola, Florida, had struggled with persistent shoulder pain for years. Simple tasks like reaching for items on a shelf or lifting groceries became challenging and painful. This constant discomfort made even normal household chores difficult and affected her quality of life. Seeking relief, she made an appointment with Dr. Mark Elliott, an orthopedic surgeon at Ascension Sacred Heart.

Dr. Elliott diagnosed Connie with rotator cuff tears. He explained that a shoulder injury, such as a torn rotator cuff, causes pain and restricts shoulder movement. Despite trying physical therapy and steroid shots, Connie found no relief. “I felt like nothing was working for me, but Dr. Elliott continued to listen and provide me with the best care possible,” Connie said.

Eventually, Dr. Elliott recommended surgery. The procedure, known as arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and biceps tenodesis, involves using small tools and a tiny camera to view and repair the inside of the shoulder. This minimally invasive technique helps fix the torn rotator cuff and address issues with the biceps tendon, aiming to restore normal function and reduce pain.

Since the surgery, Connie has been free of shoulder pain. She has returned to her favorite activities, like fishing and spending time outdoors, which she had to give up due to her shoulder problems. “Dr. Elliott is an incredible doctor. I cannot thank him enough. Since my surgery, my shoulder feels so much better. I highly recommend him,” Connie said.

Dr. Elliott is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon specializing in the latest and most innovative techniques in arthroscopy, minimally invasive surgery, cartilage restoration and non-operative treatments of sports-related injuries.
