Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa continues to be a Center of Excellence in hernia surgery

The Surgical Review Corporation’s review process adds Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa to its list of hernia centers that provide excellent care.

Ascension Via Christi Hernia Center in Wichita, KS, continues to be a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery according to the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an internationally recognized patient safety organization.

The Comprehensive Hernia Center at Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa Ascension Via Christi Hernia Center first earned this in 2020.

Being accredited as a Center of Excellence means that Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa’s collaborative hernia program continues to meet and hold high quality standards.

Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa’s multidisciplinary team is led by Ascension Medical Group Via Christi surgeon Ragnar S. Peterson, MD, who is an SRC-accredited Surgeon of Excellence. He was one of only 35 participating surgeons nationwide to be named to the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative’s inaugural list of Verified Surgeons of Quality.

“Under Dr. Peterson’s leadership, we have developed a first-class, evidence-based program that today serves patients from all over Kansas and beyond,” said Laurie Labarca, Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa’s hospital president. “Many are patients who previously have undergone hernia or abdominal wall surgeries elsewhere without success or who have complex hernias that require the highly specialized care that we are uniquely staffed and equipped to provide.”

Dr. Peterson says he is proud of the team’s work and the life-changing outcomes they’ve been able to achieve for patients with simple to complicated hernias.

“We started the hernia center to help those patients who felt as though they were out of options and beyond hope,” Dr. Peterson said.. “Having certification that we are affecting these patients positively is gratifying and speaks highly of a great team that works extremely hard.”

Health care organizations and surgeons seeking accreditation by SRC undergo an extensive self-assessment and site inspection. This process includes physicians, nurses and administrators who are actively involved in the accredited program. The inspection is consultative and educational, presenting best practices to help an organization or surgeon improve its care and services.
