Breast surgery

Plastic surgeons at Ascension Saint Agnes deliver personalized breast surgery, including breast augmentations, breast lifts and breast reductions.

Breast augmentation

A breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery that alters the size and shape of the breast with the use of silicone or saline breast implants. We customize our breast augmentation based on your body and how you want to look. When it comes to breast augmentation, we give you several options, including the type, size, and shape of your breast implants.

During your initial consultation, you will discuss your concerns and goals for your breast implant surgery. Then, your surgeon will measure you in order to choose the appropriate breast implants. You and your plastic surgeon will also go over your medical history, any medications you take, and previous procedures you have had. Do not hesitate to ask questions, as the goal of this consultation is for you to leave feeling informed, comfortable, and prepared for your breast augmentation.

The price of breast augmentation will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of implants you choose. During your initial consultation, your surgeon can give you information about the price of the surgery, as well as possible payment plans available.

What to expect during surgery

Generally, a breast augmentation procedure takes between one to two hours to complete. In most cases, the incision is made in the breast crease. The breast implants are then inserted under the chest muscle. The stitches used during your breast augmentation will dissolve on their own.

To help reduce pain and discomfort, it’s important to follow your care plan after surgery. You will need to limit your arm movements and keep your arms as close to your chest as possible.

What is the difference between silicone and saline implants?

You will get to choose between silicone or saline breast implants. While both are excellent options, you will need to decide which type of breast implant is best for you. When you visit us for your consultation, we will talk about each type of implant. Your plastic surgeon can help you decide which type of implant is right for you.

Silicone breast implants

Silicone implants come ready-filled with silicone gel. They feel more natural and are less likely to rippling, which is a particular advantage for women who have little breast tissue to cover the implant.

Saline breast implants

Saline implants are less expensive than silicone and are filled with saline after the shell has been inserted into the breast. This allows the surgeon to customize the size more precisely.

Implant exchange and breast augmentation revision

If you had a complication from a previous breast augmentation, such as a rupture, infection, or capsular contracture, we can do a revision procedure. This usually involves the removal of your current implants and replacing them with new implants.

Breast lift

Over time, it’s normal to experience changes in skin elasticity. Aging, pregnancy, significant weight loss, or genetics can change your breasts. This condition can be corrected with a breast lift (mastopexy), which reshapes the breasts, removes excess skin, and raises the nipples and areolas for a perkier, rounder look. The size of the areolas are reduced as well.

At Ascension Saint Agnes Plastic Surgery, our surgeons have years of experience performing breast lifts. We customize every procedure based on your body and how you wish to look. During your consultation, we will discuss your concerns about your appearance and your goals for your breast lift, as well as your medical history, medications you take, and previous procedures you have had. We will answer all of your questions, explain what to expect from surgery, and tell you how to prepare for your surgery.

What to expect during a breast lift

A breast lift usually takes about 2-1/2 hours. It can sometimes be combined with other procedures, such as a tummy tuck, as long as the total time of your surgery does not exceed 7-8 hours.

The incisions are usually around the areolas, under the crease of the breasts, and in a vertical line from the areolas to the crease. In some cases, the incision under the crease is not necessary. There will be scars, but they become less noticeable in time and with proper scar care.

Breast reduction

A breast reduction helps reduce the size of the breasts. This procedure reduces the cup size along with the areola size and lifts the nipple to a natural place as the nipple often descends lower down with breast enlargement. The breasts are often asymmetrical and a breast reduction can be performed to minimize the asymmetry. Breast reduction can be a cosmetic or reconstructive procedure depending on the symptoms as well as the amount of tissue removed from each breast.

During a consultation for breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammoplasty, we discuss your symptoms, medical history, expectations for the cup size, and more. Measurements and pictures are also taken at the time of consultation.

Several factors determine the cost of a breast reduction, including the amount of tissue that must be removed, the desired outcome, and any accompanying procedures you may choose, such as liposuction or a breast lift. We will provide a detailed cost breakdown for you as part of your breast reduction consultation.

What to expect during a breast reduction

Most health insurance providers have their own criteria to determine whether or not they cover a breast reduction. Although most insurance companies don’t cover elective cosmetic procedures, you should contact your provider to learn if your situation warrants a claim.

A breast reduction will usually require incisions in the lower breast area, but you can rest assured that your scars will be discreet. If necessary, the incision around the nipple is placed within the deeply pigmented areola, while the incisions on the lower breast are generally hidden in the crease. If a large amount of breast tissue is removed with a great deal of excess skin, it requires an incision on the undersurface of the breast, commonly known as an anchor scar.
